Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc.. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.Org Level 7271101 - LARC Admin LbkOrg Level 1Texas Tech Univ Health Sciences CtrCampusHSC - LubbockDepartmentLARC Admin LbkMajor/Essential Functions**Employees in this position are primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the LARC cage washroom.**Operate mechanical cage washers and bulk autoclaves in accordance with departmental SOP's to clean, sanitize, and sterilize animal cages, water bottles, and related equipment, including operation of the cage washer, cabinet washer, bedding dump station, bedding fill station, autoclaves, water bottle filler, cage racks, rack recoil station, etc. Promptly report any equipment problems to supervisor, manager, or Associate Director.Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all washroom equipment. Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and other periodic maintenance on cage wash equipment, including: check/ change filters, screens, drains, etc; conducting and logging quality assurance tests, such as temperature indicators, and biological indicators according to SOP's, etc. Report any issues to supervisor, LARC Manager, or Associate Director.Conduct general cleaning and housekeeping of the cage wash areas, including: washing floors, walls, equipment, air vents, sinks, door frames, and feed containers. Take out trash.Transport animal cages, large equipment, water bottles, and feed and bedding supplies within the facility.Maintain feed and bedding rooms. Rotate stock as needed.Fill clean animal cages with proper amount and type of bedding and enrichment, Fill clean water bottles to appropriate levels. Autoclave as needed.Responsible for the daily care of rodents, pigs, and/or frog as assigned in accordance with LARC SOP's. This includes observing, feeding, animal handling, changing cages, cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and monitoring care of animals in a manner that is consistent with State, Federal, and Institutional regulations. Change any assigned rodent cages according to schedule, and daily spot changes as needed.Conduct daily animal census counts and health checks as assigned. Accurately record animal census counts on log sheets. report health concerns to Veterinarian or designee. Maintains records of animal care, animal health, and animal room information to be in compliance with NIH, USDA, AAALAC, and animal care facility guidelines.Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary animal care equipment. Clean/organize animal rooms, procedure rooms, and hallways within facility as assigned. Remove trash, sweep, and mop floors.Follow all safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) procedures regarding use of chemicals, biohazards, and equipment.Observe and report all problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems to Associate Director, LARC Manager, or supervisor.Provide customer service to faculty, students, and research personnel.Available for weekend and holiday duties as assigned on a rotational basis. This includes animal feed and water checks, health checks, environmental checks, and facility checks. Report any issues to supervisor or Associate Director.Operate departmental vehicles to retrieve animals and/or supplies as needed. Assist with vehicle cleaning/maintenance as needed. This includes taking vehicles to garage, gas station, or car wash.Miscellaneous additional duties as requested by the supervisor, manager, and/or veterinarian/director.Required QualificationsCompletion of the 8th grade. No previous work experience. Ability to follow instructions.Preferred QualificationsCompletion of high school or GED.Ability to follow oral and written instructions required.Ability to keep accurate records of cage washer and bottle washer temperatures required.Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.Some knowledge of animal husbandry preferred.Mechanical skills preferred.Good written and oral communication skills preferred.Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) preferred.Team-oriented, but able to perform tasks individually with an emphasis on customer service.Keen, detail-oriented observational skills.Required AttachmentsResume / CVPay StatementCompensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as, the institutional pay plan.
