Position Summary
Performs semi-skilled work driving a school bus, transporting pupils to and from school and special events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Transportation.

Essential FunctionsDrives school bus on a designated schedule and route; picks up and delivers students to and/or from school facilities, special events and field trips.Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.Maintains cleanliness of assigned vehicle; sweeps floors and washes windows; washes exterior as needed.Obeys traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus and automobile operations.Ensures passenger safety; puts children in car seats; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as necessary.Transports only authorized students.Reports all accidents and completes required reports.Conducts periodic emergency vehicle evacuation drills.Records mileage, student counts, arrival and departure times; maintains various records and prepares a variety of reports on activities.Makes bus available for periodic maintenance; delivers bus to garage for service and inspections; fuels bus at assigned stations.Attends meetings and training as necessary.Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and/or appropriate administrator.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the principles and practices involved in operating assigned automotive equipmentGeneral knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of streets.General knowledge of traffic rules, regulations and statutes.Skill in the safe operation of the automotive equipment to which assigned.Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, parents and the general public.Qualifications, Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED.Minimal experience operating automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision.Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).Special Requirements
Valid commercial driver's license with S&P endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
