Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, to ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A valid CDL License to drive a school bus.
2. Such additional health and age requirements as the Board may
require.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy
the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum and
extracurricular program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Obey all traffic laws.Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.Keep assigned bus clean.Keep to assigned schedule and route. (The Transportation Director will assign all routes.)Check bus before each operation for mechanical defects.Notify the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure or lateness.Discharge students only at authorized stops.Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.Transport only authorized students.Report all accidents and completes required reports on time.Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with
provisions in the School Board's policy on the Evaluation of
non-professional personnel.
REQUIREMENT:Meet all requirements to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)Be at least 18 years of age.Submit to random alcohol and drug testingMeet all physical, mental, and moral requirementsMeet all requirements to obtain a CDL Class B with Air Brakes, Passenger & School Bus EndorsementsHave no more than 4 points against current driving record in previous twelve monthsLicense may not be suspended for a moving violation within the previous 5 yearsSuccessfully complete the 20 hours South Carolina School Bus Training Class (held monthly).Successfully complete 20 hours of Behind the Wheel TrainingPass a Department of Transportation physical examinationTest negative for alcohol and drugsHave a minimum of twelve (12) months driving experience preferredSubmit to a criminal background check.

Travels to and from school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations and other destinations are required.

Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.Effective verbal and written communication skills.Effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.Ability to physically move through the bus, center and classrooms.Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
