Job Title: Chief Operations Officer - Adult Hospitals
Job Summary: The Chief Operations Officer will be responsible for the daily operations within University of Mississippi Medical Center Health System for the areas of: Radiology, Clinical Labs, Respiratory Therapy, Trauma Management, Palliative Care, an Administrative Residency and Support Services (Bio-Med Engineering, Environmental Services, Food Services, Linen Services, Dialysis, Language Services, Ambassadors, Neurophysiology and 100 Day Workout). This position is also accountable for driving high quality, patient satisfaction, safety, financial success and aligning strategic goals with the overall mission of the organization. Reports to the CEO - Adult Hospitals, and serves on the hospital administration leadership team.
Education & Experience
Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Healthcare Administration or related. Must have at least seven (7) years of experience in Administrative Leadership in a healthcare setting. Experience cannot be substituted for education.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: N/A
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Must be able to effectively communicate with various groups and stakeholders ranging from: frontline staff, physicians, chairs, administrative leaders, and external governmental entities. Champion of organization effectiveness, quality and safety, and collaboration. Must have strong business and financial acumen to meet performance objectives and budget.
Responsibilities
Acts as part of a team that determines the services and programs necessary to meet the need of populations served by UMMC.
Contributes to the organization’s financial strength by redesigning work flows, retraining and/or deploying staff, managing labor, and ensuring operational excellence.
Builds and maintains positive and effective relationships with all of the constituencies within UMMC; maintains an open, supportive culture of inter-professional collaboration and excellence in healthcare delivery and academic leadership.
Participates in the establishment and implementation of short and long term organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
Works through the management team and medical leadership of the hospital, serving as a resource to help reduce costs, enhance revenues, achieve effective utilization and quality goals and objectives, analyze and utilize information to develop and support management decisions. Achieves effective utilization and quality goals and objectives.
Acts on behalf of the CEO, Adult Hospitals in their absence within the policies of UMMC and guidelines established by appropriate functional delegations.
Works closely with Finance to maximize financial performance of the Jackson Hospitals and related services. Partners with Finance to ensure appropriate financial data is available and actionable.
Establishes the operating platform to manage capacity and patient throughput by working with clinical leadership to ensure balance across the enterprise.
Ensures the strength of the operations management team and supports the development of future leaders by emphasizing teamwork and collaboration as well as open, honest and direct communication.
Works to ensure systems are aligned for superior patient and staff experience and engagement that is operationally efficient and manages successful transitions in care.
Ensures compliance with the Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies.
Physical and Environmental Demands Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional reaching, constant sitting, occasional standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
