The Underwriting team at JSA is hiring for a
Commercial Property & Casualty (P&C) Underwriter
to support our growing book of business. As a member of this team you will place new business with in-house binding markets as well as submit business to brokerage markets. Our Underwriting team is a vital contributor to the success of JSA, and as such we are looking for candidates committed to hard work and upholding our service standards. Position Description:
The
Commercial Property & Casualty (P&C) Underwriter
role is responsible for placing new business with in house binding markets as well as submitting business to brokerage markets. Submissions from retail agents can include written applications, phone correspondence and website generated opportunities. Underwriting integrity and profitability is always an integral part of the placement process. Underwriters must be resourceful, independent thinkers and self-sufficient as well as self-motivated. They must also be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with various deadlines. Essential Responsibilities:
Review new business accounts to determine acceptability based on in-house binding authority company guidelines while using internal underwriting philosophies in order to maintain profitability which includes a thorough understanding of coverage options and required form language.
Properly rate and quote new business accounts using internal company computer systems as well as multiple carrier rating engines.
Submit new business accounts to brokerage (non-binding) markets for quoting.
Work with carrier underwriters to determine pricing, coverage, and acceptability of risks and gather any additional information needed by the carrier in order to serve as the liaison between the carrier and retail agent.
Bind new business and provide all required issuance documents to internal staff, and company staff, in order for the policy to be issued in a timely manner.
Rate and communicate endorsement requests from retail agents on an existing book of business.
Assist in the tracking of required applications and payments on business placed.
Review of and handle inspection recommendations and discrepancies.
Effectively communicate (written/verbal) information to both internal and external customers to ensure standards of excellence are maintained.
Assist retail agents with questions on business during the quoting process as well as after placement of a risk has been made.
Maintain a professional relationship with internal staff, retail agents and company underwriters via written communication, off-site travel and phone communication.
Participate in online chat programs via the company website as delegated.
Participate in weekly staff meetings.
Performing other work-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
College degree (preferred)
E&S underwriting experience
Insurance license (preferred or ability to obtain)
Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills
Must possess basic computer knowledge and skills including email and Microsoft Office products as well as the ability to learn custom program and partner company systems
