Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions : Receives and dispatches emergency and other non-emergency calls; answers telephones and provides information to the general public; sends and receives messages via teletype to and from state, federal, and local agencies dealing with various activities such as missing persons, wanted persons, stolen vehicles, vehicle registrations, drivers license information, and criminal histories; monitors and operates two-way radio communications with Beaumont Police Officers as well as other agencies and officers; operates computer assisted dispatch (CAD) equipment; enters data into computers; operates foot pedal to activate microphone.

Working Conditions
Works indoors in a highly stressful environment; is exposed to constant noise of two-way radio communications equipment, verbal abuse, crowded office space, often hostile public; is exposed to dust, cold due to air conditioning. Must be available to work any shift assigned on any day; must be available to work on all weekends and holidays; days off in the middle of the week; work hours are subject to change as deemed necessary by management; must be dependable and prompt in getting to work. Must be available to work mandatory overtime when needed.
Minimum Essential Qualifications
Knowledge : Knowledge of general office practices and procedures; some knowledge of city geography; knowledge of business English and spelling; knowledge of proper telephone communication techniques.
Skills/Abilities : Ability to prepare and type records accurately; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and general public; ability to function effectively under stressful conditions; ability to perform data entry; ability to perform mathematical calculations; ability to hear and listen carefully; ability to discern and obtain facts from a telephone conversation; ability to retain information by memory; ability to write legibly by hand; ability to plan and prioritize different types of situations; ability to accept constructive criticism and use it to improve job skills; ability to take control of situations with courtesy; ability to perform more than one job function simultaneously; ability to learn city geography; skill in the performance of data entry; ability to operate foot pedal on dispatching equipment.
Physical Requirements :Constantly sees, hears, performs data entry, sits, moves foot up and down to activate pedal; frequently stands, walks, kneels, squats, twists body, and lifts objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
Education/Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and experience providing the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Experience with police dispatching, or other 2-way radio or telephone communications equipment is highly preferred; experience handling multiple tasks, including receiving and referring a high volume of telephone communications in a busy and/or hectic work environment preferred.

Applicants must take a typing test and preferably type 40 wpm. Must pass a Telecommunications Operator written test and oral interview. Subject to same background investigation as police officers. Must be able to satisfactorily complete training for the computer aided dispatch system within four months from the date of hire. Must also be able to complete forty (40) hours of classroom training in telecommunications and receive TCOLE licensing for telecommunications within one year from the date of hire. Must complete 911 certification class and pass state TCOLE telecommunications exam. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and polygraph for security clearance and drug/alcohol screen test.
