Kern Medical cares for 15,500 inpatients and 125,000 clinic patients a year. Per Diem employees supplement department staffing needs, with no guarantee of minimum hours. Per Diem minimum scheduling expectation is one (1) shift per four week schedule. Position : Information Systems Specialist I/II - Part-Time - Per Diem

Definition:

Under close supervision, to assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of data processing personal computers, hardware components, software applications, cabling and connectivity issues and systems integration; and to work with computer-based equipment and network equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Incumbents assist in providing technical support for desktop computer equipment including hardware, software and peripheral devices. It is distinguished from Information Systems Specialist II - Desktop Technician by the latter's responsibility to maintain and repair more complex computer and system integration problems. Incumbents are expected to obtain experience and proficiency which would lead progressively toward the next level, Information Systems Specialist II - Desktop Technician

Essential Functions:

Maintains, troubleshoots and performs repairs on all data processing equipment, including video display terminals for mainframe, midrange, personal computers, terminal control units, network systems, modems, multiplexors, printers and related equipment. Analyzes, researches and resolves technical problems in all networks (both for the mainframe networks, localized personal computer networks, and personal computer interfaces to the mainframe networks), cabling and connectivity issues and system integration problems. Installs new data processing telecommunication equipment and network related cables at all locations and makes modifications to equipment, as needed. Installs, troubleshoots and performs repairs on stand-alone personal computers (PC's) and their related equipment; upgrades and relocates computer equipment and terminal cables, as needed. Responds to requests for assistance related to desktop and computer problems; coordinates repairs with appropriate vendors, and documents service and repair activities. Participates in reviewing new products and improvements in existing equipment as it pertains to data processing, cable connectivity and system integration. Maintains and monitors network related software. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots copper and or fiber optic cable within the department. Assists in maintaining and or implementing tracking systems pertaining to data processing needs. Assists with maintaining data processing network diagrams. Remains current in data processing technology, products and equipment May be required to monitor telecommunication equipment. Assists with training for both users and technical staff pertaining to data processing needs. May represent the department at information technology meetings. May be required to maintain, troubleshoot and perform repairs on telephones and related equipment. Performs other job-related duties as required. Employment Standards:

Level I:

Completion of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units from an accredited college or university with course work in technical fields (Electronics and Computers)

OR

Completion of an accredited trade or vocational school training program in digital computer repair or electronics;

OR

One (1) year paid full time experience in electronics or the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex computer-based systems and equipment.

Qualifying experience must have been within the last five (5) years.

Level II:

Completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university with course work in technical fields (Electronics, Computers, Computer Science or Management Information Systems) AND one (1) year of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of complex computer-based systems and equipment;

OR

Completion of an accredited trade or vocational school training program in digital computer repair or electronics; AND two (2) years paid full time work experience in electronics, one (1) of which must have been in the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex computer-based systems;

OR

Three (3) years paid full-time experience in electronics or the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex computer-based systems and equipment;

OR

One (1) year experience as an Information Systems Specialist I -Desktop Technician OR Programmer II in the Kern County classification system.

Qualifying experience must have been within the last five (5) years.

Additional Requirements:

Applicants must possess the physical capacity to perform all essential tasks. A valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment

Knowledge of

:

Computer architecture (PC, midrange and mainframe) and data processing technology, equipment and systems; methods and techniques utilized in troubleshooting computer hardware, software and system integration problems; operational characteristics of computer software and hardware equipment; and general knowledge of network operating systems.

Ability to

:

Respond to and identify user needs and determine appropriate resolutions; install, maintain and upgrade software applications; install, maintain, upgrade and repair hardware equipment; troubleshoot software, hardware and general network computer problems; use good judgment; communicate clearly and effectively, both verbal and written; follow written and oral instructions; work well and communicate with staff, other county departments, public and private agencies.

Supplemental:

Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background investigation, and be fingerprinted.Disqualification for felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

As Disaster Service Workers, all county employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.

If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver's License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.

If position responsibilities require driving a vehicle owned, leased or rented by Kern Medical, then possession of a current valid California Driver's license, a signed authorization for Release of Drivers Record Information and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
