Job Title: Certified Orthotist and Prosthetist - Orthopedic Surgery

Job Summary: Provide prosthetic and orthotic clinical and technical care to both outpatients and inpatients.

Education & Experience

Meet the educational and experience requirements for certification by The American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC).

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: C ertification by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) or from the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Clinical knowledge/experience with providing direct patient care. Technical knowledge/experience associated with fabricating and repairing prostheses and orthoses. Sound clinical documentation and writing skills. Experienced with orthotics and prosthetics billing, coding, and managed care. Ability to communicate clearly and teach effectively.

Responsibilities

Reviews patient prescription/referral. Takes comprehensive patient history including demographic characteristics, family dynamics, diagnosis, work history, avocational activities, signs and symptoms, medical history, patient expectations, and results of diagnostic evaluations. Consults with other healthcare professionals and caregivers concerning patient conditions and needs. Communicates with patient and/or caregiver regarding the recommended plan. Formulates treatment goals and expected prosthetic and/or orthotic outcomes; consults with appropriate medical personnel to modify the original prescription and/or treatment plan. Supervises and assesses the fabrication of prosthetic and/or orthotic patient devices and appliances to insure the design and materials used meet patient needs, departmental standards, and structural safety. Provides continuing patient care and periodic evaluation to assure, maintain, and document optimal fit, function, and comfort of the prosthesis or orthotic device. Reassess patient knowledge and understanding of goals and objectives. Maintains applicable files and records; post materials used, cost and other relevant information to ensure accurate patient charges. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations and professional and ethical guidelines. Maintains and adheres to departmental policy regarding appropriate inventory of supplies and devices. Assists in ordering of additional supplies as needed. Physical and Environmental Demands Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, frequent lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, constant reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
