Network Engineer, Optical Networks Woodbury, NY - Hybrid onsite 3 days per week following initial 90-day 100% onsite probationary period

Position Summary: The ideal candidate will collaborate within the IP Networks team in planning, designing, and implementing optical networks to support VoIP, High-Speed Data, Video Transport, Business Services, Intranet, and LAB networks. Offer implementation support on new deployments and designs. Create written engineering documentation to support the installation and configuration of IP Technologies. Engineer various aspects of the telecommunication network including power distribution, synchronization and timing, fault alarm telemetry systems, and data communications networks.

Responsibilities:

Perform master and detailed core planning and optimization of the optical backbone. Generate and implement Engineering Design Documentation for new network builds or augments pertaining to network layers 1 and 2. Manage deployment of project plans, installation coordination, hands-on configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of carrier-class soft switch implementations, including integration with TDM, data & IP technologies such as Ethernet, IP routing and switching, media gateways, Client, feature and application servers. Work closely with the ILEC Transport, IP Network engineering, Switch engineering, and Network Operations Center to interconnect carrier connections from the PSTN into our backbone network. Responsible for Tier 4 technical support in problem determination and resolution. Maintain and update engineering records of the network including network maps, databases, and schematics. Provide expert-level technical support to equipment installers and network testers. Provide technical support to sales and sales engineering associates when required. Understand technical challenges and their business implications; effectively communicate implications with other operating departments. Maintain positive communication and relationships with vendors for diagnosing and rectifying problems. Provide training to the NOC and other engineers within the organization. Aid with the evaluation of new equipment/vendors. Perform on-going online maintenance and diagnostics to the network.

Requirements:

2+ years of experience as an engineer for optical networks Experience with specifications of different optical fiber types, optical loss, link budgets, dispersion compensation, DWDM, SONET, and RPR & ethernet technologies Experience with Engineering levels 2 and 4 fiber BLSR and UPSR rings, protection configurations, synchronization, and timing specifications Experience creating system support documentation including instructional procedures, provisioning guidelines, test plans, problem documentation, and functional process flows

Nice to have experience:

Cisco CCNA, CCNP, and MEF CECP Experience with Ciena/Nortel OME6500, OM5200, OM3500, CPL and Cisco MSTP
