Northrop Grumman Marine Systems specializes in the analysis, development, manufacture, assembly and testing of missile launching and handling systems, propulsion, and power generation systems for naval surface ships and submarines.

We are looking for you to join our team as a

Principal

Computational Fluid Dynamic Engineer

or

Sr. Principal Computational Fluid Dynamic Engineer

based out of Sunnyvale CA or Ocean Springs, MS.

You will join the highly talented, motivated, and collaborative Modeling, Simulation, and Performance Analysis team, and will support the development of complex computational fluid dynamic (CFD) performance assessment models for surface and underwater missile launching systems. Models will have a focus on compressible gas dynamics, subsonic/sonic/ supersonic flow, liquid injection, phase change, rigid body dynamics, launch vehicle aeroballistics and hydroballistics, and fluid-structure interaction (FSI); elements required to accurately predict system performance. Experience with commercial CFD solvers—e.g. CFD++, Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or CFX—and mesh generation tools—e.g. Pointwise—is required.

Candidate must be able to correlate and validate CFD results against trusted sources such as launch test data, journal publications, etc.

A strong background in the principles of computational fluid dynamics is necessary to assist across a range of assignments. Candidate must be able to formally document results (e.g. technical reports, publications, presentations) and communicate effectively with internal and external customers. The successful candidate will be collaborative, open, transparent, and team-oriented with a focus on team empowerment & shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning, and a culture of automation.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on the qualifications listed below:

Basic Qualifications for Principal:

Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or a closely related STEM discipline with 5 years of physics-based modeling and simulation environment experience or a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or a closely related STEM discipline with 3 years of physics-based modeling and simulation environment experience.

Experience with commercial CFD solvers such as CFD++, Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or CFX.

Programming or software development experience in general engineering languages (i.e. MATLAB, C++, Fortran, Python, bash/shell scripting).

Experience with mesh generation tools such as Pointwise.

Experience with high performance computing.

Experience with fluid-structure interaction (FSI).

Experience with Verification and Validation (V&V) of CFD models.

Superior writing skills are required for documentation and technical exchange.

Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance.

Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or a closely related STEM discipline with 9 years of physics-based modeling and simulation environment experience or a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or a closely related STEM discipline with 7 years of physics-based modeling and simulation environment experience.

Experience with commercial CFD solvers such as CFD++, Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or CFX.

Programming or software development experience in general engineering languages (i.e. MATLAB, C++, Fortran, Python, bash/shell scripting).

Experience with mesh generation tools such as Pointwise.

Experience with high performance computing.

Experience with fluid-structure interaction (FSI).

Experience with Verification and Validation (V&V) of CFD models.

Superior writing skills are required for documentation and technical exchange.

Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with CFD++ software.

Experience with overset meshing and moving bodies in CFD.

Experience with computer clusters and parallel processing in Linux and Windows 64-bit environment.

Salary Range:

$92,600 - $160,900

Salary Range 2:

$114,900 - $199,600

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
