GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for routine work relating to water and electric meter turn-ons, shut offs, accuracy testing and read verifications. Work also includes meter reading as directed, using handheld units and a laptop.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Turns on and/or shut off water service as required (includes shut off for non-payment).
• Replaces water meters and/or water meter registers as necessary.
• Processes service orders; cuts utility services off and on as required; changes out electric and water meters.
• Inspect meters and associated components; remove, replace, test and repair water meters and associated water system components; reports discrepancies as required.
• Interact with customers and public; delivers delinquency notices or other information as required; investigates and follows-up on customer complaints.
• Verifies meter reads and/or serial numbers and Radio Transponder (RT's) numbers as requested.
• Maintains and gathers GPS records for electric and water meters.Interact with customers and public; delivers delinquency notices or other information as required; investigates and follows-up on customer complaints.
• Perform routine office tasks such as record keeping, reporting, answering phones, and other administrative tasks.
• Clears and removes dirt and debris away from meters and out of meter boxes.
• Assesses condition and accessibility of water meters, water meter boxes and water meter box lids. Replace, raise, meter box lids and make accessible as necessary.
• Perform rereads of accounts as necessary.
• Performs quality control checks on new and established services
• Assist with utility locates; assist the Utility Business Office.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE of, SKILLS AND ABILITIES to:
• Knowledge of City Streets.
• Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of automated metering systems, repair and installation methods, material and equipment.
• Perform semi-skilled general maintenance and construction tasks; perform heavy physical labor.
• Skill in customer service and communicating with customers.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to read maps to find service addresses.
• Ability to read meters manually within assigned routes.
• Ability to work well within a team environment and independently.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• High School Diploma or G.E.D or equivalency.
• Must be computer literate - This position will be heavily computer based (Including but not limited to Microsoft Office Proficiency, AMI software, and all GSuite Programs.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable MVR.
Preferred :
• Experience with water meter reading, maintenance, installation or repair experience; Experience with AMI systems and 3-phase metering installation testing software associated with electronic kW/kWh meter, volt, amp and time-of-use meters
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Environment:
Work is primarily performed outside in and around heavy traffic in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Work exposes the employee to hazards associated with traffic, chemicals, fumes, bees, dust, vibrations from machinery or blasting, and loud noise levels. Protective equipment is required such as gloves, safety vests, protective eyewear, work shoes or boots and coveralls. The employee must occasionally travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and verbally communicate to exchange information.
Physical:
Work requires the physical ability to perform heavy and sustained lifting and carrying of equipment, materials, and supplies; physical exertion requiring crawling, pushing and pulling; and standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Work also involves walking on uneven terrain; squatting, bending and stooping; and climbing on and off of machinery and lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
