Responsibilities
Handle a full caseload of cases on behalf of low-income and vulnerable clients.
Participate in and help coordinate legal clinics and workshops.
Coordinate referrals to other units to provide holistic legal services to low-income clients.
Conduct community education presentations to clients, partner agencies, and service providers.
Oversee volunteer attorneys and law students through training, technical support, and general supervision.
Represent PLC as an attendee at legal networking and community outreach events.
Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work required.
Other duties as assigned.
Consumer:
Represent clients in matters including debt collection defense, bankruptcy, homeownership scams, elder abuse, and other civil litigation in both state and federal court proceedings.
Health:
Primarily responsible for providing legal support and completing regular reports for the Developmental Understanding and Legal Collaboration for Everyone (DULCE) Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP). Staff MLP legal clinics at Family Resource Centers in South Orange County, where clients are assisted on a holistic basis for a variety of civil legal issues. Engage in direct legal advocacy for individuals seeking help with matters related to accessing health benefits and for people living with HIV/AIDS through the AIDS Legal Assistance Project (ALAP), a partnership with Orange County Health Care Agency.
Immigration:
Provide fearless direct legal representation to, in addition to coordinating and supervising pro bono representation for, survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, persecution, and other crimes (U Visas, T Visas, VAWA, asylum, and adjustment of status); children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected (Special Immigrant Juvenile Status); young people who arrived as children (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals); lawful permanent residents seeking U.S. Citizenship (naturalization); and for immigrants in Immigration Court proceedings (both detained and non-detained removal defense).
Qualifications
Active membership in the California State Bar/Bar Membership pending or eligibility to practice under State Bar Multijurisdictional Practice Program.
Bilingual English/Spanish or other language strongly preferred for Consumer and Immigration Units; required for Health Unit.
Demonstrated knowledge of consumer law and/or civil litigation preferred for Consumer Unit; demonstrated commitment to working with the Latinx community for Health Unit; demonstrated commitment to working with immigrant communities preferred for Immigration Unit.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, and work independently and as part of a team.
Must have own transportation, valid CA Drivers License, insurance, and good driving record; travel throughout Orange County and neighboring counties will be necessary, including to courts located in Santa Ana, Orange, Costa Mesa, Los Angeles, and (for Immigration Unit) Adelanto, CA.
