The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor in its Torts Division. Torts has an active litigation and trial practice defending the City and its employees in personal injury lawsuits filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, including premises liability, roadway design, motor vehicle accident, paramedic malpractice, police pursuits, wrongful death, defamation, and delayed emergency response cases. Torts attorneys work with and represent employees from numerous City departments.The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor is responsible for an individual docket of cases often with higher exposure and in-depth discovery and motion practices, serves as lead counsel at jury trials, makes settlement recommendations, and engages in negotiations. In addition, the Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor assists, advises, and helps train other attorneys in the division and is given responsibilities such as developing protocols, presenting training modules, providing input and drafts for staff and attorney evaluations, assigning cases, conducting case reviews, and coordinating with client departments and responding to their legal inquiries.Application Process and MaterialsYou must submit an on-line application along with the required documents on the City of Chicago Careers website by the post-extension date listed on the website.Cover letter that (1) includes the position title and job number as noted on the posting; and (2) specifically identifies how you meet the minimum qualifications and have the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below;Resume;Law school transcript (official or unofficial);One writing sample; andCurrent printout of your attorney registration status from the Illinois ARDC website at www.iardc.org (or your admitted state bar's equivalent).Failure to submit all materials will result in your application not being considered for the position.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesIdeal candidates will possess:Seven (7) years of work experience as a licensed attorney litigating personal injury cases of increasing complexity;Five (5) jury trials in the Circuit Court of Cook County or comparable venue, including acting as first chair and presenting and cross-examining medical and other opinion witnesses at trial;Significant legal writing experience and substantive motion practice;Familiarity with the Illinois Governmental and Governmental Employees Tort Immunity Act and other statutory and common law immunities and defenses;Experience negotiating settlements in personal injury cases;Demonstrated leadership and initiative;The ability to work well with others; andExperience supervising, training, or mentoring others in the legal field.
