Overview:

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner assesses, plans, directs and evaluates patient health care. Providing care through advanced practice nursing standards includes diagnosis, treatments, and consultations. The PMHNP may work in inpatient and outpatient situations, depending on the area assigned, and can perform independently or as part of a treatment team. Performs the task of educating patients about preventative care and prescribed treatments. As a member of the clinical team provider, comprehensive physicals for all patients inclusive with medical comorbidities. As a licensed advanced practice nurse, the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is responsible for providing psychiatric services, physical and psychosocial examination of their patients. The PMHNP has prescriptive authority for the management of care.Responsibilities:Function independently to perform age-appropriate history and psychiatric evaluations for complex acute, critical, and chronically ill patients with mental health disordersOrder and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs.Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.Implement interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability, including but not limited to serving in the first assisting role.Assist with the provision of care per facility, state, and federal regulations.Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.Facilitate the patient's transition within and between health care settings, e.g., admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision-making by providing educationalPerforms other duties as requested.

Qualifications:Education:Master Degree - MSN from an accredited school of nursingGraduate of an accredited Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.Experience:

Minimum three (3) years of psychiatric nursing experience required.At least one (1) year as psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner experience preferred.Knowledge and Skills:Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Familiarity with Epic Software preferred.Strong written and oral communication skills.Current competency and knowledge of standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role or practice.Demonstrated excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.Ability to fully utilize BHMCs electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.Licenses, Certifications:Current NYS Nurse Practitioner in License required.Current NYS RN License required.Current NYS Nurse Practitioner certification in the specialty area.Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); PALS provider card as required by department and facility.Physical Requirements
