OverviewAdministers intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics to render persons insensible to pain during surgical procedures. ResponsibilitiesPrepare operating room with necessary anesthetics and review patient medical history.Prepare prescribed solutions for intravenous injections and administer.Assemble machine for administering gas and tests it to ensure proper functioning.Prepare patient position on operating table according to type of operation to be performed.Study physical findings of preoperational examination to determine probable effects of anesthetic on patient.Ascertain that blood of proper types is available for emergency use.Take patients' blood pressure, respiration, and pulse. During procedure, periodically takes patient's blood pressure, respiration, pulse, and watches for significant physical changes.Explain procedure to patient to secure cooperation and bolster confidence.Maintain patient in surgical anesthetic state, adjusting oxygen, gas flow, and keeping air tubes in position as necessary. Keep surgeon informed of patient's condition.Take necessary remedial action, such as aspiration of throat and administration of oxygen.On patient's chart, record condition of patient with all pertinent information.Assist in moving patient from operating room to recovery room or floor.Disassemble equipment and cleans work area or directs others to perform these functions.Remove supplies and accessories to supply room. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment according to standard procedures.Maintain records of each anesthetic administered.Performs other duties as requested. QualificationsEducation:Graduate of an accredited New York State R.N. program, a BSN degree preferred.Experience:Minimum five (5) years as a RN.Knowledge and Skills:Good interpersonal skills.Physical Requirements:Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.The statements herein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees, and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.
