The Department of Medicine (DOM) is dedicated to providing highest-quality expert patient care, training of the next generation of internists and subspecialist physicians, and research effort to discover and develop more effective medical therapies and cures for tomorrow. Integral to UMMC the only academic medical center in the state of Mississippi, the DOM represents the largest academic campus, the DOM includes 13 divisions: allergy and immunology, cardiology, digestive diseases, endocrinology, general internal medicine, geriatrics, hematology and oncology, hospital medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, rheumatology and molecular immunology, palliative and supportive care, and pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine. The DOM is the home for the NIH-supported Jackson Heart Study for the past 20 years and also plays a major role in the new RURAL (Risk Underlying Rural Areas Longitudinal) Cohort Study). Aspiring to be a major contributor to biomedical research across the spectrum of investigations, members of the department maintain collaboration with many well-established basic science groups across campus, with the schools of population health, nursing, and pharmacy, and other institutions around the country. With the opening of the University’s new Translational Research Center and the clinical trials research unit in the hospital, we plan to expand our research interests further in coming years. The Center for Medical Genetics and Precision Medicine was created to expand genetic testing as a health care force. Genetic testing can help physicians diagnose early and help prescribe preventative measures for those who inherited a certain gene mutation and determine those who did not. Medical genetics and precision medicine together offers physicians and researchers a way to predict more accurately which measure for treatment and prevention will work on a particular disease. The newly created division will serve as a “hub” for increasing knowledge about ways subspecialists can be more effective for their patients.Molecular Pathology Lab at UMMC
The Department of Pathology utilizes a next-generation sequencing (NGS) machine, a first-in-the-state resource that allows physicians to access DNA samples that search for genetic variants associated with some forms of blood cancer and lymphoma. Testing on this platform allows physicians and patients to choose the treatments best suited for their particular genetics and do it quickly.UMMC Biobank
The University of Mississippi Medical Center established the UMMC Biobank to support translational and clinical research in addition to serving as the tissue bank core of the Cancer Center and Research Institute. The biobank began operations in November 2011 with a focus on cancer-related surgery specimens and has expanded blood collections to other areas, including transplant, gastrointestinal, congenital heart disease, and HIV clinics. The UMMC Biobank is committed to allocating diverse samples for various research studies led by UMMC researchers and other established organizations. This allows the opportunity for urgent discovery and development of tests, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals.UMMC and Mayo Clinic Clinical Research Collaboration
UMMC and the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN signed an agreement to broaden and deepen their collaboration in clinical trials, and other medical research and education. A number of cooperative clinical research relationships have flourished between Mayo and UMMC since the first collaborative study launched in 1995 in the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Arteriopathy (GENOA). In addition to research into the genetic underpinnings of disease through epidemiological research, collaborative efforts between Mayo and UMMC include clinical research projects that look at genetic variations in treatment response.Location
