QualificationsKyocera SLD Laser is looking for an individual to participate in achieving GaN device development objectives in the Advanced Development group at Kyocera SLD Laser. The successful candidate will be hands-on, self-motivated, and detail oriented. She/He/They will possess the skills described in this opportunity, including knowledge of device physics, specialty and novel materials and device characterization techniques, testing software and equipment, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills, attention to detail and eager to be a team player. She/He/They will be part of the Advanced Development Group, the group which is at the heart of the research and development of novel semiconductor devices at the core of Kyocera SLD Laser’s state-of-the-art products, working closely with other R&D technicians, engineers, and scientists, contributing substantially for the design and optimization of our devices.

Specific Responsibilities

Run data analysis to drive the development and performance improvement of semiconductor devices such as laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, photodiodes, etc.

Perform specialty characterization of intrinsic device parameters (such as gain and waveguide loss on laser diodes, etc.) and work with technicians for recurring tests.

Execute design of experiment methodologies, and statistical data analysis methods using softwares such as MATLAB, Python, JPM, or equivalent.

Responsible for materials and semiconductor device modeling/simulation using in-house or commercial softwares such as FIMMWAVE, Silense, Lumerical, or equivalent, in order to direct development towards device performance improvement and evaluation of novel device architecture.

Be part of a multi-functional team of R&D Scientists to combine experimental and modeling/simulation results to drive the progress of cutting-edge technologies involving world-class novel semiconductor devices.

Experience and Skills

MS or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.

Knowledge of semiconductor device physics such as in laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, photodiodes, etc. Should be familiar with gain and loss in laser diodes and the physics behind it.

Knowledge of semiconductor physics (band structures, band diagrams, carrier transport, carrier recombination, etc.) and familiarity with modeling/simulation softwares such as Silense or equivalent.

Familiar with optical design using standard design software such as LightTools, Zemax, or equivalent Ray Tracing.

Familiar with different optical technologies such as imaging or illumination systems, light sources, thin films, polarization optics, adaptive optics, or color science.

Experience with design of experiment methodologies, and statistical data analysis methods and software (MATLAB, Python, JPM, etc.)

Experience with waveguide optical mode modeling and design using softwares such as FIMMWAVE or equivalent, as well as the physics of near-field, far-field and polarization.

Hands-on laboratory work with optics metrology tools such as spectrometers, beam profilers, polarizers, etc.

Self-motivated and willing to assume ownership of projects.

Good PC and Microsoft Office skills.

Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.

Collaborate with diverse team across multi-disciplinary fields to incorporate novel display technologies.

The full-time base salary range for the Sr Research Scientist position is $136,000 to $180,000 per annum. The range reflects the minimum and maximum possible base salary for new hires for the role, based on the advertised location.
