This global role will support our marketplace product and impact teams, advising on all aspects of product strategy, operations, and expansion. You’ll counsel Etsy’s business, product, marketing, operations, compliance, and engineering teams on the application of payment laws and regulations, helping us to build products, adopt policies, and expand internationally in a way that meets our obligations, as well as the needs of our community.This is a full-time position reporting to Assistant General Counsel, Product, Marketing and Payments. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.Etsy Legal is a dynamic team of lawyers working on some of the hardest technical, commercial, and regulatory problems around - we’re looking for a great product lawyer with varied expertise to join our team. In this role, you will work with people throughout the company to help Etsy and our brands grow in a manner that complies with the various regulations that apply to Etsy across the world.What does the day-to-day look like?Provide expert legal counsel on a wide range of product-related matters, including privacy, data protection, consumer protection, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance. This includes performing advisory services on legal issues relating to seller experience, ESG (environmental, social, and governance), and the Impact team, among other product initiatives.Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders to identify and mitigate legal risks in the development and launch of new products and features.Conduct legal research and stay up-to-date on relevant laws, regulations, and industry trends that impact Etsy’s products and services.Develop and implement legal strategies and best practices to support the company’s goals and minimize potential liabilities.Assist in managing responses to regulatory inquiries, investigations, and litigation related to product issues.Educate and train internal teams on legal considerations and compliance requirements relevant to product development and deployment.Work with other support teams (litigation, tax, compliance, accounting, and outside counsel) to provide seamless support to partners.Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:JD and are admitted to a state bar (preferably NY or CA) and are qualified to work in-house in New York.6+ years experience, at both a law firm and in-house, dealing with issues related to product development for tech and e-commerce companies.Bonus if you have experience with marketplaces, e-commerce, and/or ESG (environmental, social, and governance) issues.Experience being the primary point of contact with clients, and taking the lead in managing the legal side of a project.The ability to speak to technical experts or business leaders in plain English, without legal jargon.Executive presence and are passionate about clearly articulating risk and strategies to mitigate risk to clients and executives.Excellent business, negotiation, and presentation skills.
