Summary:

The Surgical/OR Technologist, under the direct guidance of the registered nurse, assists in the care and safety of perioperative patients. He or she functions as a member of the perioperative team responsible for assembly of case supplies, creating and maintaining the sterile field and assisting the surgeon throughout the procedure by providing the sterile instruments and supplies required. Possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. Works cooperatively with ancillary departments and other team members. Participates in performance improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

High School graduate or equivalentSuccessfully completed a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technology and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization

ORHas completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corp

ORProvides evidence they were employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015Must also complete annually fifteen (15) hours of continuing education to remain qualified to practice as a surgical technologist

EXPERIENCEPrevious experience in an operating room preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITYAppropriately and safely operates multiple instruments and equipment during the intra-operative phaseBasic Life Support certificationStrong written and verbal communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:Subject to inside environmental conditionsAvailable for extra and on-call duties
