The Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is hiring an

Electrical Design Engineer

to provide comprehensive electrical engineering support across the campus. The role involves overseeing low and medium voltage equipment, conducting fault and load flow studies, performing safety evaluations, reviewing designs, specifying equipment for maintenance and small projects, reviewing construction submittals, responding to RFIs, and ensuring accurate record drawings.What You Will Do:Lead electrical engineering design activities and deliverables, ensuring new and modified systems enhance overall reliability.Act as the SME for low voltage electrical systems (208V, 240V, and 480V 3 Phase power), representing the Facilities Engineering Department and LBNL.Design systems and modifications that meet lab standards, code requirements, operability, constructability, and project specifications.Prepare original engineering design drawings and calculations, and review those prepared by subcontractor engineers.Determine methods and procedures for new assignments, coordinating interdisciplinary teams as a technical lead.Ensure construction documents, including one-line diagrams, control schematic diagrams, lighting, power, and grounding plans, meet project requirements.Coordinate design reviews, supporting Design Managers and Project Managers to provide cost-effective electrical system designs that meet safety, resilience, and reliability targets.Manage the scope, schedule, and budget of subcontractor engineers, and coordinate with or manage subcontractor design engineers/architects.Maintain and update LBNL Master Specifications and Standard Details for electrical discipline.What is Required:Level 3:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of five (5) years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or three (3) years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree or equivalent related professional experience.Exhibits behaviors that drive project success, including collaboration, effective communication, innovative problem-solving, and a bias for action.Excellent verbal and written communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to effectively present, explain, and advise line management and science program customers.Able to work well with internal and external contacts at all organizational levels, handling multiple projects with varying priorities and tight deadlines.Skilled in negotiations, coordination, and conflict management, partnering with colleagues and stakeholders to resolve issues creatively and effectively.Thorough knowledge of:

Electrical design principlesElectrical construction methods and materials for facilities constructabilityPreparation of construction documents, including specifications, medium and low voltage power distribution, raceway layout, underground duct bank, lighting, grounding, control schematics, and connection diagramsCurrent industry and regulatory standards, including CBC, NEC, and NFPA standards 70E, 70B, and NETA

Level 4 (in addition to the above):Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or six (6) years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree or equivalent related professional experience.Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.Desired Qualifications:Knowledge of medium voltage electrical engineering design, including power system analysis (short circuit, voltage drop, power factor, protective relay coordination).Advanced knowledge of electrical construction methods and selection of equipment, including medium/low voltage switchgears and materials for power distribution.Advanced knowledge of DOE Orders and Federal Standards.Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and other computer-aided drafting software.Proficient with electrical design software (ETAP, SKM-PTW, EasyPower, ASPEN, PSLF), database management, cost estimating, and project scheduling.
