Leidos has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineering Lead to join our team in Huntsville, Alabama or San Diego, CA. A s a Mechanical Engineering Lead in Leidos, you will lead a Mechanical Engineering team designing the hardware and tooling for Space-based products . This role offers a unique opportunity to impact Leidos' current/future Space-based sensor projects using your engineering leadership and mechanical design expertise, working to lead your team closely with the product development and validation teams on finite element analysis (FEA) design by providing mechanical simulation support for current hardware virtual machines (HVM) and advanced hardware development technologies/techniques. As the Mechanical Engineer Lead, you will oversee the development of project designs, develop, and decompose specifications, and understand the design system models. This role requires the development of designs in Solid Works, mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models (preferably using ANSYS Parametric Design Language, APDL), maintaining APDL macros/workflows, establishing FEA methodologies for test correlation, material characterization, and performing stress/mechanical analysis for board package designs and failure prediction.

Primary Responsibilities
Manage the Mechanical Engineering Team for our space payload development team with the following responsibilities:
- Design components to facilitate the necessary structure for our space-based designs while ensuring functionality from an environmental perspective from fabrication to operation (vibe, shock, temp, vacuum, including shipping, launch, and in orbit, etc.). Work with our team to make sure all requirements are met (including manufacturability, cost, and schedule).
- Understand the complete mechanical design from overall system level to individual piece parts, as well as tolerance stack-ups.
- Complete mechanical design reviews successfully.
- Perform and provide mechanical analysis of designs (including tolerance and environmental stack-ups), facilitating Monte Carlo analysis to verify the design's capability across manufacturing tolerances and operational conditions.
- Generate requirements for hardware test plans.
- Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful prototypes into production.
- Work with manufacturing engineering to break down large, complex assemblies into logical subassemblies and sub-processes based on manufacturing capabilities, cost, and product requirements.
- Develop agreed-upon project schedules and priorities with the project and engineering management leads and schedule projects/resources to meet deadlines.
- Perform project management related tasks and communication, including reviewing and managing engineering project progress regularly.
- Produce regular progress reports and documentation by project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead.
- Provide technical leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians and contribute to the success of a collaborative team.
- Identify and communicate any engineering constraints/issues to project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead.
- Confer with engineering staff and other personnel to identify and resolve problems with the design or implementation.
- Coordinate design components with a multi-disciplinary as required for specific modifications and new development.
Actively participate in developing business growth and discriminators consisting of:
- Support business development activity, including client interface, proposal preparation, industry research, and team building.
- Support efforts in proposal development, project scoping as well as with client relationship development.
- Provide and coordinate timely responses for project RFIs (Requests for Information) and project-related submittals.
- Work independently to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, workflow, and procedures, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications to Engineering designs.
Additional Mechanical Engineering responsibilities include:
- Produce mechanical engineering scheme drawings and layouts for evaluation against customer specifications.
- Understand the fundamentals of silicon, package, and board-level interconnect technologies.
- Attend regular project and design reviews and provide feedback on timings and completion of work to the projects team.
- Identify and highlight areas where additional support may be required to ensure timely and accurate completion of work.
- Provide engineering support during manufacture.
Basic Qualifications
We're looking for Mechanical Engineering (ME) possessing the basic ME foundations such as:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or related field, plus 8+ years of work experience.
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering work experience including 3+ years of work experience in mechanical FEA analysis.
- 2+ years of experience leading a mechanical engineering team.
- Awareness of modern digital engineering design processes such as Agile and SecDevOps and how that can be applied to mechanical engineering design and development techniques.
- Experience and high proficiency with GD&T and performing tolerance stack up analysis.
- Capable of utilizing advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques (sub-modeling approach, contact analysis, non-linear analysis), and test procedures for material characterization/testing Warpage/Stress analysis, Solder joint reliability (SJR) prediction, and board assembly process simulation analysis.
- Complete stress analysis (FEA), design risk assessments (DRA), and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA).
- Identify complex technical issues and provide necessary solutions to eliminate root causes.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and deliver hardware in a resource-constrained environment creatively.
- Demonstrated in-kind or direct team leadership skills, with backing examples.
- Assist in the development of cost estimates for infrastructure mechanical systems.
- Familiar and having experience with US DoD Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs) and mechanical-related documentation as required by US DoD Data Item Descriptions.
- Demonstrated proficiency with CAD based software such as SolidWorks, Simulink, etc.
- Possess strong and fluent communication, project focus, and execution skills.
- US Citizen with the ability to obtain Secret clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience (+5 yrs) with space products (space vehicle or payload) design, manufacturing, or support that includes broad demonstrated experience in electrical, mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineering including product design, validation, test, troubleshooting, repair, and support evaluating unique space environment-induced designs through low power and stress calculations and for cost-effectiveness and ease of manufacture and maintenance.
- Experience with managing mechanical engineers and technicians.
- Experience with mechanical engineering design and development process and workflow.
- Experience working cross-functional teams for project-wide collaboration.
- Space Mechanical Systems familiarity.
- 2+ years of experience in ANSYS (APDL/Workbench).
- US Citizen with current TS/SCI clearance
- Up-to-date Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
