Description

Summary/Objective:

Under minimal direction, responsible for Underwriting assigned commercial book of business. Works within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination. Uses underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations. In conjunction with senior management works within the limits of authority.

Essential functions:
  • Provide effective and efficient account review and guidance to home office and producing offices.
  • Impart technical and systems expertise and guidance in capturing new and renewal account information.
  • Interface with local brokers, clients, home office and producing offices as required. This includes data and risk information collection, and the systematic processing of new and renewal business.
  • Reconciling premiums and monitoring of outstanding premiums; timely and accurate issuance of contractual documentation.
  • Works on the most complex underwriting risks employing advanced diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess acceptability. Develops specialized endorsement language as necessary.
  • Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills. Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company and group guidelines and standards.
  • Determines appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
  • Prepares quotes and answers questions from agents, policyholders, home office, producing offices or other external contacts and escalates issues to management along with proposed solutions as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
  • Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities.
  • Keeps current on state issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and freely shares information with others.


Requirements

  • Minimum 5-10 years relevant experience in property underwriting of medium to large properties,
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong broker and client network
  • Proficiency in the use of underwriting tools along with ability to interpret and present results.
  • Ability to handle multiple deals in parallel without losing oversight
  • Strong communication and project management skills
