POSITION: Manager-School Safety & Security (district-wide)

WORK DAYS: 12 Month (260 days)

STATUS: Exempt (Special Payroll)

SALARY RANGE: (based on previous experience/knowledge/skill): $75,000-$110,000

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Manager of School Safety & Security will report to the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent or their designee and coordinate appropriate district and school staff in the implementation of 'best practices' safety guidelines and procedures, while collaborating with school administrators. Serve as the law enforcement and fire services liaison for the School Board and all fire enforcement agencies serving the Proviso Township High School District 209 and the communities we serve. The individual in this position will be responsible for developing and implementing the district-wide safety plan and other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or their designee.
The Manager works hand-in-hand with all security personnel, building principals, and district administration to effectively develop and execute security and safety functions of all employees.

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Pland and direct a staff development program for all areas of school safety and security based on needs assessment. Possess the ability to organize, plan and present safety training to all employees of the District.
  1. Oversee security and alarm systems.
  1. Lead and partner with school-based administrators in the development of a staff safety plan.
  1. Identify strengths and weaknesses of the various aspects of District and school safety guidelines and procedures and prepare reports.
  1. Develop a comprehensive plan for district and school safety and work collaboratively with individuals responsible for implementation of the plan.
  1. Ensure the District complies with state law requirements regarding safety and security.
  1. Communicate safety information and needs with school administrators and departments, and other governmental agencies; coordinate with those agencies for annual drills.
  1. Communicate school safety programs to parent groups.
  1. Communicate District policies and state laws to the public and individuals.
  1. Analyze and assist in the development and interpretation of the District and School's Comprehensive Safety Plans to school personnel and community members.
  1. Respond to safety and security inquiries or concerns in a timely manner.
  1. Exercise proactive leadership in promoting the vision and mission of the District.
  1. Assist with applying for appropriate competitive grants.
  1. Involve all levels of employees in the development of District and Schools' Comprehensive Safety Plans.
  1. Facilitate and coordinate District Safety Response Teams.
  1. Promote school safety programs within schools and departments.
  1. Assist in staff development programs at District and building levels.
  1. Attend pertinent conferences and workshops for informational purposes.
  1. Promote school safety through the use of professional organization resources.
  1. Implement and monitor approved grants.
  1. Assist in developing school safety budgets.
  1. Work with District School Administrators in the hiring and supervision of police liaisons, school security and general oversight and collaboration with police liaison and security officers in all schools.
  1. Evaluate Security Leads and assist with district-wide security officer evaluations/professional development as necessary.
  1. Work collaboratively with school administration teams regarding the development and implementation of their safety and security needs and program.
  1. Document accordingly and write-up safety and security staff as necessary, when there are concerns as it relates to effectively carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
  1. Assist with the planning and scheduling of security officers during the school day and afterschool/evening/weekend activities and events to patrol and secure all D209 properties.
  1. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Critical Skills:
  1. Proficiency and expertise in developing policies and administrative procedures related to school safety.
  1. Utilizing technology in the implementation of a comprehensive safety and security program.
  1. Establishing and maintaining effective communication techniques between law enforcement and fire service agencies and school district personnel.
  1. Handling emergency situations in an appropriate and expeditious manner.
  1. Communicating effectively with the community on school safety issues.
  1. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  1. Organizational and leadership skills in an educational setting.
  1. Must have working knowledge of gangs and violence and how to effectively work with law enforcement and school officials in the reduction of gang related activities in a school setting.
    9. Proficient use of electronic surveillance equipment
    10. Ability to read and interpret blueprints

Experience:

The knowledge, skills and abilities listed above are typically acquired through levels of education and experience listed. However, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience, which provides an applicant with the listed knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position will be considered.

Requirements:

AA (BA/MA Degree preferred).

Spanish speaking desired (not required)

Previous leadership experience (organizing, planning, scheduling).

Must have certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).

P.O.S.T. Certification/Training desired.

Must have previous experience with school safety, security or law enforcement.

Prior administrative experience in a school setting is preferred. Experience in corrections, law enforcement, military/tactical operations is desired.

  • Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Stand, walk, crouch, and do moderate lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Knowledge of multimedia equipment and current security technology.
