Job Description

The Toronto Star is looking for a Team Editor to join its ambitious new opinion department. The Team Editor will work collaboratively to produce opinion journalism of the highest caliber, from conception to publication. Reporting to the associate editor of opinion, they will be digitally oriented, helping to build the Star's audience, engage readers and elevate the discourse.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for big ideas and great writing, a knack for helping writers make fair and persuasive arguments, and a track record of deft structural and copy editing.

Team Editors can be assigned to any newsroom department, in a variety of capacities. The initial assignment will be to the opinion team.
  • Generate ideas for opinion pieces, assign columns and op-eds, edit columns and op-eds, choose visual material to accompany opinion articles
  • Generate and curate opinion content for all our platforms
  • Collaborate with Star managers, editors, digital producers and freelancers on content ideas, projects, planning and strategy
  • Work with digital producers and editors inside and outside the newsroom to ensure the smooth production of opinion pieces
  • Evaluate and edit copy for quality and accuracy. Ensure there no legal issues or factual, spelling or grammatical errors, and that the work meets Star standards of fairness and good taste


Qualifications
  • Advanced journalism skills with a broad knowledge of local, national and international issues
  • Superb news judgment; story-telling, editing and multimedia skills
  • Understanding of digital publishing best practices
  • Knowledge of basic elements of design and presentation
  • A proven track record of working collaboratively and innovatively
  • Passion, energy and creativity. You are a self-starter and self-motivated with the ability to identify and solve complex problems, quickly and independently
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Able to simultaneously manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Relentlessly high standards; detail-oriented and deadline-driven

Salary: $71,360.63 - $98,894.76

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment, but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. These positions will be located Toronto.
