**Lateral Police Officer Incentive Program of $10,000.00Under general direction to perform responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work by patrolling assigned areas and answering calls and complaints; to investigate incidents and crimes; to make physical arrests; and to perform related work as required.Performs patrol on an assigned shift; conducts property checks on businesses and homes for burglary and other criminal activities; stops and questions suspicious persons; assists with a variety of emergencies; issues citations for violations of laws; prepares reports of incidents and investigations; contacts victims, witnesses, complainants, and suspects for detailed interviewing when required; secures statements; may have responsibility for preserving evidence at the scenes of incidents and crimes; follows-up on investigations when assigned; makes arrests of criminals; appears in court proceedings when summoned; books, transports, and has responsibility for the care and safety of detained persons; issues traffic citations and performs traffic control assignments; performs accident investigations; performs a wide range of law enforcement assignments; makes initial and supplementary investigation of crimes in areas such as personal violence, theft, checks, intelligence, juvenile, narcotics, and others; investigates cases involving missing persons, lost children and runaways; collects material evidence and does crime scene work; performs surveillance of persons and places; apprehends, interrogates and arrests suspects; prepares and submits reports; establishes and maintains liaison with other criminal justice agencies.Requirements:Possession of a basic certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. is required, supplemented by college course work from an accredited college or university in police science or related field.Work Background:

Entry Level requires one year of non-sworn California law enforcement experience with concurrent employment by a law enforcement agency or have a separation date of one year or less and be eligible for rehire.Lateral entry requires one year of experience as a police officer in the State of California within the last twelve months. Knowledge of:Modern law enforcement methods, and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, and traffic control -Criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies.Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in court.Recent court decisions affecting police powers.Use and care of firearms.Ability to:Perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments.Make physical arrests of criminals.Secure information from others at the scene of incidents.Demonstrate keen abilities of observation and memory.Think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.Understand and carry out oral and written directions.Prepare accurate incident and case reports.Use and care for firearms and other police equipment.Meet established standards of physical endurance, agility, health, and vision.Effectively represent the law enforcement functions of the Department with concerned individuals, organizations, and other governmental agencies.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.Communicate effectively orally and in writing.As of August 24, 2021, the City of Montebello implemented a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.
