Contra Costa Health is offering an excellent career opportunity for qualified individuals interested in Substance Abuse Counselor positions. Substance Abuse Counselors work at the Alcohol and Other Drugs unit within the Behavioral Health Division. The candidates selected will engage in counseling and prevention activities for individuals, groups, and families experiencing or at high risk for substance abuse problems.The ideal candidate will have a proven track record demonstrating:Ability to provide counseling, family counseling, and educationEffective communication with people experiencing anxiety, stress, and depressionKnowledge of substance abuse counseling methods and techniquesCharacteristics of the ideal candidate:Excellent oral and written communication skillsRespect for cultural and linguistic differencesResponsibilities:Interviews applicants for program servicesConducts intake assessmentsProvides counseling to individuals, families, and groupsConducts group education programsProvides crisis intervention and counselingDevelops recovery plans and makes referralsRepresents the division through outreach activitiesMaintains client case recordsParticipates in meetings and trainingPlans and implements clients' activitiesMonitors client files and treatmentPrepares reports for agenciesDevelops aftercare plans and provides follow-upProvides customer serviceLicense Required:

Candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of State licenses accepted during the application process.Certification Required:

Candidates must hold certification as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor approved by DHCS.Education:

Completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university, including specialized coursework.Experience:

One year of counseling experience in a substance abuse program or as a Counselor Trainee.Substitution for Education:

Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the required education.OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required.Application Process:
