To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investigative work; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs; to perform a variety of technical law enforcement tasks.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDPolice OfficerGeneral supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant.Technical or functional supervision may be provided by other police personnel.Assignments may require direct or indirect supervision of sworn and non-sworn personnel.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSCompletion of high school or its equivalent.Current certificate of completion of a P.O.S.T. regular basic course from a State of California P.O.S.T. approved Police Academy.Possession of a valid Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.No felony convictions, or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.EXAMPLE OF DUTIESMake arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court.Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.Prepare reports of arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.Stop drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations and make arrests as necessary.Direct traffic at fire, special events, and other emergency or congested situations.Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public.THE SELECTION PROCESSShall consist of three phases: (If you should need assistance in completing the employment application or in participating in the selection process, please notify Human Resources prior to the filing deadline or as soon as possible).Electronic applications will be accepted until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received. HERE .Phase One

- Application Review: The first phase of the selection process shall be a detailed review and appraisal of each candidate’s application.

Those candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of education and experience, as submitted, may be invited to participate in the next phase of the selection process. No weight shall be assigned to this phase of the selection process.

Applicants must attach a copy of a valid California Basic P.O.S.T certificate.Phase Two

- Oral Appraisal Interview:

Candidates who receive a minimum score of 70% on this phase shall move to the next phase of the selection process.Phase Three

- Physical Agility Exam:

Candidates who receive a passing score on this phase shall have their name placed on the Eligibility List for Police Officer Lateral. Eligibility Lists are generally valid for one year.

Once the list is established, the Police Department may conduct follow-up assessments.Prospective candidates must successfully complete a thorough background review. Upon a conditional offer of employment, prospective candidates must successfully complete a psychological and medical examination and provide proof of legal work status.
