Aquatic Programs Specialist (Lifeguard)

Performs semiskilled work monitoring pool patrons to ensure safety, maintaining the pool and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.Responsibilities:

Monitors pool patrons to ensure safety; enforces all pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe aquatic environment; assists swimmers in need and performs rescues and first aid as necessary.Plans and facilitates exercise classes, water safety classes, and Lifeguard certification classes; tests patron's swimming ability to determine aquatic skill level; assists with planning and facilitation of other department programs.Assists with scheduling of the aquatic facility; works with outside organizations for group reservations and programming.Assumes the duties of the Aquatic Programs Supervisor in his/her absence.Assists Aquatic Programs Supervisor in training aquatics staff on safety protocols, maintenance, conducting exercise classes, and other aquatic division duties.Maintains cleanliness of the pool deck, surrounding areas, pool equipment, and shower areas; monitors pool chemical levels to maintain within safe, recommended levels; backwashes filter system to maintain ideal operating conditions.Performs routine maintenance on pool equipment and machinery; identifies maintenance issues that need to be addressed and reports to supervisor.Participates in programs for continuing education and to maintain certifications.Assists with special events and other departmental programs; assists with maintenance in other areas of the department.Assists with administrative support tasks such as producing or printing flyers for aquatic or other departmental programs.Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Licenses and/or Certifications:

Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Required .Water Safety Instructor Certification

Required.Aqua Fitness Instructor Certification

Preferred

or within six months of hire.Lifeguard Instructor Certification

Preferred

or within a year of hire.Aquatic Facility Operator

Preferred

or within 18 months of hire.Knowledge:

Knowledge of water safety rules, general pool policies, and Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR practices and techniques.General knowledge of pool cleaning and maintenance practices.Skills:

Swimming, communication, customer service, supervisory, and teaching skills.Abilities:

Physical ability to perform rescues and assist disabled persons.Ability to take quick and appropriate action under stressful conditions.Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Ability to work successfully in a team environment.Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed indoors, but is exposed to temperature changes and/or extreme noise, odors, heights, depths, and/or dust.Essential Physical Activities:

Stooping, crouching, sitting, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
