The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in English. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.Primary duty includes the following:Teach developmental and transfer composition, workplace writing, and/or literature courses.Minimum QualificationsPossession of a Master’s or above in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or above in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR the equivalent (see below)Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staffKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSuccessful experience in teaching, or evidence of preparation to teach, the full range of college English: developmental and transfer composition, workplace writing, and literature.Willingness to work in the Writing Center, which serves students enrolled in English and ESL courses and in courses participating in the Writing Across the Curriculum Initiative.Ability to teach in specialized programs designed to encourage student retention.Familiarity with composition theory and research.Ability to use teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills.Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences.Willingness to monitor students’ progress regularly and judiciously, and provide substantive feedback.Familiarity with the use of technology in teaching and learning.Acceptance of the division’s commitment to established academic standards.Ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own pedagogy.Enthusiasm for the well-being of the department, division, college and district as reflected in a willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality.Preferred QualificationsFaculty BenefitsAcademic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California or they may choose to participate in the STRS Cash Balance program or Social Security.Open DateOpen Date 07/08/2014First Review DateClose DateOpen Until Filled YesSpecial Instructions SummaryRequired application materials will be screened on the basis of Requirements and Desirable Skills and Abilities listed in this announcement.
