Assistant Professor in Music (Tenure Track)GENERAL INFOThe Music and Theater Arts Section of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) with a specialty in musicology, broadly defined. The rank of Assistant Professor holds an initial appointment of three years, with renewal determined at the end of the second year. The Section offers supportive mentorship to junior faculty and seeks individuals who practice collaboration, empathy, and self-reflection in the service of sustaining an inclusive and welcoming academic culture.JOB DESCRIPTIONFaculty duties include teaching courses in music history and culture; conducting innovative research that contributes to the humanistic understanding of music; and advising students. The teaching load for an Assistant Professor is three classes per academic year. New faculty initially teach subjects in the existing curriculum and subsequently develop new course offerings in line with their interests and the needs of the Section. Assistant Professors are also expected to serve on committees, advise students, and participate fully in the governance of the Section, the School, and the Institute.QUALIFICATIONSA PhD in Musicology or a related field is required by the start of employment.
