invites applications for a 9 month, full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure-track Assistant Professor position. This position will be located at the HAREC, with an academic home in the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS). This position has a statewide assignment as a Resilient Agricultural Systems Extension Specialist. The primary purpose of this position is to develop and lead a nationally and internationally recognized research and extension program in horticulture that addresses current issues related to sustainable agriculture and development of resilient cropping systems.Specific areas of research may include those seeking to mitigate risk due to environmental stressors (e.g., drought, temperature, etc.) through the incorporation of new traits, crops, or management practices that promote beneficial soil functions and crop productivity. A successful candidate will apply this knowledge to improve the region's ability to prevent, mitigate, prepare for and respond to climate perturbations resulting in more resilient agricultural systems and economies.HAREC is the premier irrigated agricultural experiment station of OSU, Oregon's Land Grant University. HAREC serves nearly 500,000 acres of irrigated agriculture in Oregon and Washington's Columbia Basin, and is one of the largest experiment stations within the College of Agricultural Sciences. The center concentrates on discovery and implementation of agricultural practices that improve crop productivity and management. Research at HAREC emphasizes identification of new crops, plant breeding and varietal evaluation, and production practices including, soil, water and nutrient management, integrated pest management, pollinator health, plant health and disease ecology, and sustainable landscape management, including aspects of stream ecology that relate to salmon fisheries.Hermiston is in northeastern Oregon in Umatilla County, centrally located between the major cities of Portland, Spokane and Boise, near the junction of I-82 and I-84 and seven miles south of the Columbia River. The historic inhabitants of the area were people of the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla Tribes, who lived in this area for thousands of years. Today, Hermiston's population of approximately 20,000, is a regional center for commercial and professional services. Its proximity to the recreation areas of the Blue Mountains make it a favorite destination for those who enjoy fishing, hunting, and camping.
