Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning for Multidimensional Spectroscopy of

Lightsources.org, Berkeley, California, United States, 94709

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( LBNL ) Chemical Sciences Division has an opening for a Scientific Machine Learning Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team.In this exciting role, you will apply and develop machine learning methods for the analysis of multidimensional experimental measurements of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray ionization of atoms and molecules. You will first apply machine learning methods and then develop novel methods to treat new problems in ultrafast AMO physics. An essential goal of this position is to develop computational tools to analyze experiments performed with X-ray pulses at high repetition rates produced by free-electron laser facilities. What You Will Do:

Conduct research on the interaction of XUV and X-ray radiation with atoms and molecules.Develop new computational approaches to these problems.Write programs implementing new theoretical methods on massively parallel supercomputers in Python, Julia, Fortran 95, C, and/or C++ programming languages.Collaborate actively with members of theory and experimental groups in the Divisions of Chemical Sciences, Advanced Light Source, and Molecular Foundry.Prepare manuscripts describing scientific results for publication in scientific journals.Marginal Responsibilities as needed:

Preparation of research presentations (both oral and written) on experimental results.Communicate results in group meetings and participate in professional activities, as appropriate.Assist in directing graduate students and undergraduate assistants in the laboratory. What is Required:

Ph.D. in Physics or Chemistry, or Computer Science.Experience using the open-source scientific Python software stack for the analysis of spectroscopy datasets.Knowledge of fundamentals of Machine Learning, Data Science, and/or optimization methods.Experience using deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch or Tensorflow.Experience with supervised or unsupervised learning methods.Ability to communicate effectively in English with colleagues and coworkers.Good scientific writing skills.Desired Qualifications:

Ability to program modern massively parallel computers using Message Passing Interface, or sufficient computational background to acquire parallel computing skills quickly.Experience in large-scale computer code development.Experience with computational methods in chemistry and physics.Notes:

This is a full-time 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.Postdoctoral Fellow positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position has a targeted monthly salary range of $7,455 – $8,326 and is expected to start at $7,455 or above. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule – a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
