The Databricks legal team is looking for an attorney with experience in intellectual property disputes involving technology companies. This is a great opportunity to join a growing legal team, where you will serve as the in-house subject matter expert on IP litigation and licensing issues. You will also have opportunities to provide cutting-edge, practical legal advice to Databricks’ engineering and product management teams as we navigate rapidly evolving global laws and regulations in big data, including data privacy, data protection and AI. You will report to the Assistant General Counsel for Product, Privacy, and IP.

This position may be filled at the Counsel or Senior Counsel level, depending on the candidates’ years of experience and skillset.

The Impact You Will Have

Manage any patent litigation.Write and update IP-related policies, guidance, and trainingAssist commercial lawyers on IP questions in contractsProvide counsel to product managers and engineers about new product launchesManage relationships without outside counsel on IP mattersContribute as a team player to help further the status of the legal department as an effective, respected, and valued resource within the companyExercise keen business and legal judgment. You know when to say “yes”, “no, unless …”, and “no”, but you also know when to escalate concerns.Contribute to the development of processes to improve our product counseling function.Ability to expand into product counseling work where you will:develop expertise in product counseling, privacy and security laws, marketing, and technology transactions as well as the capacity to be a generalist and learn new areas of law and legal skills quickly.work cross-functionally with the commercialization, product marketing, marketing, and communications teams to bring our transformative offerings to market.deeply understand product and data risk issues to be able to hear and answer questions that aren’t asked and translate technical and security concerns into answers understandable to non-technical lawyers.

What We Look For

JD from a respected institution and admitted to the bar in the state where you practice;Degree or demonstrable experience in computer science, electrical engineering, or other relevant technical field5 or more years of experience in a law firm or in-house position focused on intellectual property litigation, with an emphasis on patent litigation involving software;Familiarity with copyright law, and experience with open source issuesDemonstrated ability to acquire deep knowledge of products in the technology spaceAbility to work independently and comfortable working with colleagues around the worldFinely developed legal judgment and risk-based assessment skillsStrong “plain English” written and verbal communication skills, excellent analytical skills and attention to detailDeep understanding of cloud and software technology, and a strong desire to work on legal issues in these areasAbility to exercise good judgment in raising issues and when collaborating with othersAbility to prioritize and manage time, and client expectations, in the face of competing demands, often without direct guidance as we scale our rapidly expanding business

Pay Range Transparency

Databricks is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, Databricks utilizes the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above. Zone 2 Pay Range

$154,400—$273,200 USD
