Summary This is a Direct Hire Open Continuous for the Nurse (Inpatient). Nurse (Inpatient) performs care to assess acute and chronic conditions, recognize, identify and interpret serious situations, administer therapeutic measures such as meds, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, nasogastric tubes, oncology medication, central lines, ventilators, fetal monitors, arterial lines, etc. Responsibilities Performs professional nursing care of medical, surgical, orthopedic and pediatric patients. Performs administrative and clinical duties. Administers therapeutic measures such as medications, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, etc. Operates and monitors specialized equipment. Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency continuing education. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must pass pre-employment examination. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. GS-4 Basic Requirements: applicants must meet the following requirements: Possession of an associate's degree or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program GS-5 Basic Requirements: applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; OR Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one (1) full year of professional nursing experience: Formulate nursing diagnosis to appropriately provide direct care for patients across the life span, from neonates to geriatric patients, including medical, surgical, geriatric, pediatric and gynecological health maintenance needs in the Inpatient Department. GS-7 Basic Requirements: applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-policies/#url=General-Policies); OR Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level): Provides direct care/services to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Nursing care is based on nursing history, assessment and physician's medical plan of care. OR Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience: Utilizes the nursing process in identifying individual patient problems and in developing, implementing and evaluating patients to initiate a nursing care plan. OR Completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program. GS-9 Basic Requirements: applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Possession of a Master's degree in professional nursing; OR Possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and at least one full year of Professional Nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 or above): Application of nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess nursing needs of assigned general medical and surgical patient development of multidisciplinary care plans to address patient needs; ability to recognize and implements proper action in response to changes in patient medical condition. Experienced in providing guidance and direction to other nursing staff members and including planning, allocation and adjustment of resources in response to workload and priority changes. Additional Information Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
