The Department of Family Medicine (FM) in the UVA School of Medicine and University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) are jointly seeking applicants for a tenured or tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with Endowed Chair appointment negotiable. The successful faculty candidate will be appointed within FM to conduct scientific research and collaborate with other investigators on topics related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion. This individual will play an important role in the Department’s vision to expand its research capacity and be a leader in primary care and population health research. He/she will be encouraged to develop further their own research broadly related to primary care and cancer prevention and cancer control. Candidates must have a proven track record of successful federally funded research and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community outreach and engagement principles and practice. Sought is an investigator with a collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation. This position will be primarily research focused, with opportunity for clinical care, dependent upon qualifications and Board Certification.

The Department’s research endeavors have focused on: population health, chronic disease prevention, epidemiology, health disparities, and quality of care. The Department is known internationally for work in evidence-based medicine, sudden infant death syndrome and other sudden unexpected infant death, cancer prevention and disparities, and the molecular and genetic epidemiology of colorectal cancer. It is an institutional leader in the areas of diversity, refugee healthcare with creation of the International Family Medicine Clinic in 2002, in transgender healthcare with the creation of the UVA Adult Transgender Clinic in 2018, and Primary Care-Obesity Medicine created in 2021. The Department is highly ranked for NIH funding among all Departments of Family Medicine nation-wide. Research infrastructure support includes statistical and quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods expertise.

Qualified candidates must have PhD, MD, DO, or MD/PhD, with Board Certification in Family Medicine if wishing to practice clinically. He/she must have a sustained and presently active record of peer reviewed Federal funding relevant to primary care and cancer prevention and control research. Candidates are particularly sought who can present evidence of the following:

A strong peer-reviewed publication record related to primary care and cancer prevention and control research.

National and preferably international recognition as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level and participation in external peer review panels.

Success in moving scientific discovery into new research directions and application in patients and populations.

Experience working with community organizations and stakeholders in an engaged research process.

A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change, and innovation.

Ability to pursue high standards related to one’s research, clinical investigations and service, and other areas of responsibility.
