Laboratory Research Technician Full time/Part time

The laboratory of Dr. Stefanie N. Vogel, Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Laboratory Research Technician.

The project involves evaluation of innate immune mechanisms in response to infection using both

in vitro

and

in vivo

systems using cell culture and mouse models of infection.Techniques to be learned by the hired person would involve handling of laboratory mice (including breeding and colony maintenance), injections, euthanasia, isolation of tissues, preparation of cells, sterile

in vitro

cell culture, protein analysis, PCR, and other assays as needed. Suitable candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn new techniques, motivation to be part of a dynamic learning environment engaging with students and excitement to study mechanisms of host responses to infection.Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, ELISA assays, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cell cultures and specimen preparation; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, electrophoresis, blotting, DNA extractions, etc.May perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: animal injections and euthanasia, tissue dissection, microscopy techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, etc.Compile and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.Perform administrative duties such as: assisting in ordering supplies, ordering animals, reconciling monthly credit card orders, hazardous waste disposal.Perform other duties as assigned.QualificationsEducation:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.Other:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
