The Chief of Staff to the Deputy Mayor for Education will serve as a key adviser to the Deputy Mayor. The chief of staff will play a crucial leadership role in ensuring Washington, DC meets the Mayor’s ambitious goals for the public education and workforce sectors. The Chief of Staff will help to ensure strong oversight over local agencies in the education cluster (including DC Public Schools, OSSE, DPR, DOES and the WIC), along with strong coordination and alignment with relevant independent agencies (including the DC Public Charter School Board, UDC and the public libraries). In addition, the role will help to develop and sustain a highly collaborative approach to solving citywide challenges and implementing solutions, to include coordinating across multiple city agencies, and the civic and private sectors. Importantly, the Chief of Staff will ensure equity is centered in the work of the DME and will also help to include the voices of residents, community-based organizations, families and students of the District of Columbia in decision-making. Supporting the development and implementation of a new approach to monitoring and sustaining citywide achievement of ambitious education and workforce goals, in coordination with the Deputy Mayor and the DME leadership teamEnsuring strong and effective relationships with key internal and external partnersDeveloping systems and processes that foster coordination and collaboration across city agenciesSupporting overall organizational management and improvementSupporting new ways of integrating racial justice and equity into the DME’s workManaging and working closely with the directors of communications, budget, performance, and legislative affairs to ensure highly effective work in these key functional areasServing as critical thought-partner to the Deputy Mayor and leadership teamRunning point on a wide variety of projects, and managing urgent tasks as they arisePerforming other duties as assigned.COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and equity as a cornerstone approach to public schooling and workforce development.Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships within city agencies, community partners, and/or other civic/private sector entities.Experience leading data-driven implementation efforts.Strong ability to lead and manage teams and projects.Eagerness to be collaborative, innovative and proactive in seeking solutions.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, responsive work environment.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree, at least five years of work experience including at least two years in a management role.Experience in K12 education and/or workforce development strongly desired.Experience working in DC city government a plus.WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed primarily in-person in an office setting. The office structure includes Times in the field are permitted when there is a related event.COVID-19 VACCINATION

There is a legal requirement that each new appointee to the Excepted Service either:be a District of Columbia resident at the time of appointment; orbecome a District resident within one hundred eighty (180) days of appointment.The law also requires that Excepted Service employees remain District residents during the duration of the individual’s appointment.
