Job Purposes:
The Data Architect supports Wright State University's reporting and analytic needs, guided by the institution's data governance framework and strategic plan, by designing and documenting the enterprise's data management framework to support business intelligence (BI) needs. The Data Architect will be a dedicated member of the BI team responsible for ongoing growth and development of the University's operational data store (ODS) and enterprise data warehouse (EDW) capabilities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, data architecture, data/information science or related field and 2 years of relevant experience
Strong working knowledge of SQL and relational databases in a data warehousing environment
Logical and physical data modeling experience and use of a modeling tool such as Erwin
Working knowledge of analytical data management environments such as data marts, operational data stores, data warehouses or data lakes
Experience in systems development working with enterprise systems and third-party applications or demonstrated proficiency with software applications, technical skills and business processes
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Experience researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist
Ability to collaborate effectively with others from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using Ellucian's Banner enterprise resource planning solution, operational data store, and enterprise data warehouse
Experience using the Oracle Database Management System
Experience using Microsoft Power Platform products, namely Power BI or other data access tool for reporting and analysis
Experience using Oracle Data Integrator or other data sourcing tool for ETL
Experience using IData's Data Cookbook or other metadata management tool for metadata management
Experience using a customer relationship management (CRM) system such as Slate
Experience working in a higher education environment
Essential Functions and percent of time:
30% Sourcing Data:
Extract, transform, and load data and participate in data quality initiatives.
Assist in the creation of data objects and structures, such as those used to forecast revenues/expenses for the institution.
Integrate data from different sources, including databases, data warehouses, application programming interfaces (APIs), and external systems.
Ensure data consistency and integrity during the integration process, performing data validation and cleaning as needed.
30% Accessing Analytical Data:
Design and develop business intelligence solutions to support business and reporting needs (i.e., reports, dashboards) using Wright State BI tools including Oracle DBMS, Microsoft Power BI, SQL, and tools associated with individual applications.
Review and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing analytical systems and develop/implement processes and standards for improving or further leveraging these systems.
20% Data Architecture:
Develop a high-level enterprise logical data model, physical data model, and views of related data sub-architectures such as database, data integration, data warehouse/BI, reporting metadata, and content management architectures.
Design/document the structure and layout of operational data systems and their relationship to the analytical data management environment including databases, the operational data store (ODS), the enterprise data warehouse (EDW), and related data stores.
Working Conditions:
Distributed office-like environment. Work may be required outside of typical hours or in excess of typical hours. Position requires the ability to work remotely and employee must provide their own internet and phone connection.
