This at-will position, under general direction, performs various routine to complex professional legal services and provides assistance and advice to Superior Court of California, County of Imperial Judges and the Court related to both civil and criminal cases; conducts legal research and provides legal consultation for Court judicial officers and staff; reviews court documents and filings for compliance with legal mandates; performs related work as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level professional attorney classification responsible for performing legal research, preparing tentative decisions and rulings and assisting judges in researching and resolving legal questions.The Judicial Staff Attorney III is distinguished from the Judicial Staff Attorney II, in that incumbents at the higher level perform a wider range of highly complex and sensitive research in an expeditious manner. The incumbent is expected to be experienced working independently in performing legal research and drafting legal opinions for judicial and executive staff and must be able to respond within short timeframes.Training and Experience:

Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law;

and

six (6) years of increasingly responsible practice of law in either civil and/or criminal legal practice, and/or professional level legal research experience in support of the judicial branch.Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Court’s vehicle insurance policy.Current active membership and good standing with the State Bar of California.The following must be attached to the application in order to be considered:Cover LetterCurrent ResumeA recent writing sample preferably on a civil motion or a memo to a judge about a civil problem.Failure to submit required documents will result in disqualification from the recruitment process.

Step I:

Applications will be reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and have submitted required documents; eligible candidates will be referred to step II in the selection process.Step II:

Those candidates that are successful in the previous step will be invited to participate in the required written and oral (interview) assessments. Assessments will be scheduled on the same day. Candidates will receive an invitation to self-schedule at least one week prior to the assessments.Step III:

Candidates who are successful in Step II may be placed on the eligibility list. Placement on the eligibility list is not a guarantee of employment.Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a drug test, background and reference checks.Status Notifications
