Soft X-ray Reflection Microscopy Postdoctoral Fellow

at Lawrence Berkeley National LaboratoryDescription:The Advanced Light Source Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is seeking a Soft X-ray Reflection Microscopy Postdoctoral Fellow. The objective of this postdoctoral position is to develop reflection microscopy of condensed matter materials using soft x-rays. You will be responsible for the development, implementation, and testing of the technique with the goal of implementing a newly developed full-frame method called randomized probe imaging (RPI) in reflection. The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team! What You Will Do:Develop the instrumentation and data analysis for a reflection soft x-ray microscopy technique.Perform soft X-ray microscopy experiments (holography and/or ptychographic-based) at BLs 5.3.2.1, 12.0.2 and/or 7.0.1.Perform image analysis in Python or similar by writing codes or using established software.Collaborate well with other research teams and scientists.Publish work in peer-reviewed scientific literature.Present work at national meetings and at regular group meetings.Contribute positively to the active research culture.Work in a safe and healthy manner consistent with EH&S guidelines.Respect diversity and strive for inclusivity in interactions with others. What is Required:PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or equivalent.Sound knowledge and keen interest in x-ray scattering, diffraction, or microscopy.Ability to safely perform independent hands-on work in an experimental endstation.Proficiency in programming for handling complex datasets, e.g. Python.Proven track record in disseminating research at conferences and in publications.Desired Qualifications:Experience in ptychography or coherence techniques.Experience in condensed matter material systems (e.g. magnetic, ferroelectric, etc.).Knowledge of x-ray resonant scattering and/or diffraction methods.Working knowledge of high vacuum practices. For full consideration, please apply by October 3rd, 2023. This position will remain open until filled.Notes:This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The monthly salary range for this position is $6,936.00 - $7,747.00. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
