The Federal Public Defender for the District of Alaska is seeking a full-time Appellate Attorney to fill a temporary appointment. The initial appointment is for a two-year term; this position may become permanent subject to availability of funds. The official duty station will be Anchorage, Alaska. The Federal Public Defender, a branch of the U.S. Courts, operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. §3006A to provide defense services to indigent persons in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts. Our office is dedicated to a client-centered defense that addresses both the legal and social support needs of our clients.Duties

Appellate attorneys primarily represent indigent federal defendants in direct criminal appeals. Duties include counseling clients with respect to their appeals, preparing briefs, and presenting oral arguments in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Appeal unit attorneys also assist trial attorneys in complex cases and represent indigent habeas petitioners in the district court and in the Ninth Circuit. They are expected to develop and maintain expertise in multiple areas of law and provide training and oversight as needed by the office.Qualifications/Requirements

All applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be admitted to practice and be in good standing before the highest court of any state, federal territory, or the District of Columbia. Preference will be given to applicants with at least three years of experience in state or federal criminal law or in appeals, trial experience, and federal judicial clerkship experience. Applicants must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States.Selection Criteria

Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to indigent criminal defense and/or public interest law and have a reputation for personal integrity; must have superior oral and written communication skills, possess excellent research skills; have the ability to manage a high-volume caseload; and work well in teams.Salary and Benefits

The starting salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications of the applicant. This position includes federal employment benefits, including health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. See the
