This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.

Municipal Attorney - Civil Law Division

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Assistant Municipal Attorney positions function as an assistant to the Municipal Attorney to provide the full range of legal services on requests from the Mayor, Manager, chief Executive Officers and Municipal Assembly, either directly or through the Municipal Attorney as appropriate and assigned.

The attorney filling this position should be a seasoned litigator qualified and eager to serve the public by conducting civil litigation on behalf of the Municipality of Anchorage in state and federal courts at the trial level and on appeal.SOME ADDITIONAL DUTIES MAY INCLUDE taking primary responsibility for litigating cases assigned to the attorney, this attorney will also provide pre-litigation advice and advice regarding settlement and further review from adverse decisions and may be called on from time to time to provide advice outside of litigation in the areas of the attorney’s particular expertise. This attorney will also consult with and provide backup for other litigating attorneys in the office regarding those attorney’s cases and receive consultation and backup from other attorneys as necessary. Over time, and as appropriate, this attorney will hopefully take on additional responsibilities mentoring and training, and eventually supervising, less experienced litigators.Graduation from an accredited school of law, must be admitted to the State of Alaska Bar Association,

years of experience as a Municipal Attorney I with the Municipality of Anchorage or the equivalent elsewhere.Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver’s license and satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within 30 days of hire.

Preferences:At least 5 years of civil litigation experience, in both state and federal court, including experience having primary responsibility for crafting overall litigation strategy, preparing dispositive motions, presenting oral argument, and conducting trials.Significant autonomy and should thus be seasoned litigators who require minimal day-to-day direction and possess excellent judgment.The Municipality of Anchorage participates in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security E-verify Program. If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment.

The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
