The Lead Scenic Artist creates samples and instructs on application techniques to Scenic Artists, attends meetings as needed, and coordinates the creation of scenery and props with other department heads. The Lead Scenic Artist should have an extensive knowledge of scenic art including, but not limited to: hard scenery, soft scenery, texture, carving, and any other covered work to execute the Designer’s vision. The Lead Scenic maintains expected levels of executing excellent technical and craft skills. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with USA Local 829. Compensation for this position is $29.36 per hour plus benefits. The typical schedule for this role is Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. but the schedule may vary based on the dynamic schedule of the theater. This position works 8-hour shifts, 40 hours per week and is guaranteed a minimum of thirty-two (32) workweeks per fiscal year.The Guthrie is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Paint SceneryPaint scenery scenic elements to convey the designer’s vision, meet the functional requirements of the play and ensure durability and safety standards.Interpret design and working drawings.Work individually or as part of a team on projects as assigned.Maintain running dialogue with the Head of Scenic Art, Scenic Arts Coordinator and Scenic Artists as applicable.Provide technical assistance and solutions to address issues of safety, function and aesthetics.Coordinate with other production departments when directed by the Head of Scenic Art to develop plans for the efficient integration of paint.Determine efficient paint process including accurate time estimates and materials needed.Take an active and positive role in setting and maintaining the levels of production craftsmanship and artistic excellence.Transition between tasks and projects when designs or priorities shift.Create prototypes and samples, when necessary, to determine the most appropriate construction method and material.MaintenanceMaintain paint equipment and inventory.Restore tools and equipment to the proper location when no longer in use and at the end of each day.Communicate problems and unsafe conditions to appropriate person(s).Clean and organize workspaces, tools, raw materials, and scenic elements.LeadAssist in setting and maintaining levels of craftsmanship and artistic excellence.Lead crews in execution of scenery and props per the designer’s intent.Monitor and lead other Scenic Artist’s work when directed by the Head of Scenic Arts in order to accomplish the goals of the show and guide workflow.Ensure information and materials are available to complete Scenic Arts projects in a timely and accurate manner.Advise and assist Scenic Artists and Overhires when requested.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONSSignificant demonstrated artistic skill and experience to meet the visual needs of the show within time and financial requirements.Extensive knowledge of scenic painting.Skill in interpreting drawing to reproducing designs accurately.Knowledge of a wide variety of materials to offer greater flexibility in executing designs, including, but not limited to hard scenery, soft scenery, texture and carving.Demonstrated leadership skills.Can problem solve creatively.Strong commitment to safety in the workplace.Can communicate effectively verbally and in writing and work flexibly to respond to design changes and shifting priorities.Comfortable working on ladders, lifts and at heights of up to 16 feet with the use of proper safety equipment.Can lift between 25 – 50 lbs. continuously throughout an assigned shift.Can bend, twist, crawl and kneel throughout an assigned shift.Must be willing and able to work Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and able to flex schedule based on the dynamic schedule of the theater.Experience with and commitment to working with individuals and teams that exemplify diversity of identity, experience, and perspective, including but not limited to race, color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, age, family and/or marital status, creed, religion, ancestry, disability, national origin, sexual orientation or sexual identity, veteran status, genetic information, pregnancy, body size/type, status with regard to public assistance or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law.THE LOCATIONThe Guthrie Theater is located in the historic Mill District along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
