POSITION: Music Director/Organist

PART TIME

REPORTS TO: Fr. James Flynn, Pastor

Primary Responsibility : Provide overall coordination and direction of the music/liturgy ministry for St. Matthew Parish Community. This includes preparing the music, scheduling and communication with cantors within an appropriate time frame, providing organ accompaniment for all weekend liturgies, and ensuring coverage for funerals, weddings, and other parish liturgical/sacramental events.

Specific Responsibilities:

Weekly Masses:

Saturday, 4:00 pm, Sunday 10:00 am

Recruit and schedule Cantors

Select Music

Rehearse Cantors

Prelude 10 minutes or more before each Mass

Funeral Masses:

Music Director/Organist will be notified of all funerals and have the responsibility of playing the music, or finding a substitute. The MD will be compensated for each funeral ($125.00 gross will be added to monthly check for each funeral.

Music Director will be responsible for booking a cantor for all funerals.

Weddings:

Music Director sets his/her own stipend for playing for weddings, within the American Guild of Organists guidelines, and is to discuss this with the couple and agree upon the fee at the time of consultation.

It is expected that the Music Director play all weddings celebrated at St. Matthew. If the couple elects to hire outside musicians, that is acceptable. However, the Music Director’s bench fee must still be paid by the couple.

Penance Services:

Music Director will provide for three (3) parish penance services per year. (First Penance/Reconciliation and two (2) seasonal Penance Services.

Confirmation Services:

Music Director will provide for one (1) Confirmation Mass per year

Parish Mission:

Music Director will provide music for the Parish Mission and schedule cantors and/or substitute musicians if necessary.

Parish Council:

If possible, the Music Director will attend Parish Council meetings. If unable to attend, s/he will notify the parish secretary. Likewise, the Music Director will attend staff meetings when possible.

Compensation and Benefits

Vacation and Sick Time:

One week vacation time is provided. The Music Director will work to secure a substitute with prior consultation with Fr. Flynn.

Sick time will be provided per the guidelines in the St. Matthew Parish Earned Sick Time Policy (July 2015).

Continuing Education:

St. Matthew Parish will provide a stipend for travel and registration for meetings, lectures, seminars and concerts related to liturgical and/or classical organ music.

Salary:

The Music Director salary will be reviewed annually by the Parish Finance Committee.

Should the Music Director engage a substitute, except for sickness or vacation, s/he will personally provide a stipend to the substitute.

Suggested Music:

The Music Director will provide an updated list of hymns and also instrumental selections for weddings and funerals. Couples and families will choose their musical selections from this list, unless discussed with and approved by the Music Director. In addition, the Music Director will consult with the pastor if the family or couple wish to include musical selections outside this list.

Qualifications:

Sound knowledge of and practice consistent with Vatican II and recent USCCB liturgical teachings and documents.

Professional competence in organ along with vocal performance and proficiency in the reading of music.

A bachelor’s degree in music, sacred music, liturgy, or the equivalent is desired, but not necessary.

Previous experience as a Music Director for a Catholic parish or equivalent position is preferred.

The ability to communicate and work professionally and collaboratively with others.

Computer literacy

Must provide (or obtain prior to employment) clearances required by the Diocese of Worcester
