The Milwaukee County Transit System is proud to have a diverse workforce that’s committed to connecting our community to jobs, education, and life with essential transit services.JOB SUMMARY:Milwaukee County Transit System Bus Operators drive in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner while adhering to a pre-determined route and schedule. This position exhibits excellent customer service skills and allows passengers to board, travel, and alight at scheduled stops.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Safely operate transit bus in compliance with Milwaukee County Transit System policies and all traffic laws.Collect fares, inspect bus passes, and issue valid transfers professionally.Operate the radio, farebox, and other systems within the bus as per company policies.Provide public timetables and accurate information to customers.Call street locations and other requested stops per ADA guidelines.Ensure accessibility for disabled passengers.Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.Perform vehicle inspections and report defects.Monitor special bulletins and detours.Follow company policy for handling lost articles.Complete necessary reports accurately.Conduct oneself appropriately as a representative of the Milwaukee County Transit System.Perform other duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS:Must be at least 21 years of age.Must be able to work any hour, weekends, and holidays.Must have a valid Class D Wisconsin driver’s license for at least one year prior to application.Valid CDL Class B License with “P” Endorsement.Must be available continuously during the Bus Operator Training Program.No more than six points on the Motor Vehicle Report in the last three years.No revocation or suspension of a driver’s license due to moving violations in the last three years.No OWIs in the last five years, and no more than one in the last fifteen years.Stable work history with excellent attendance.Successfully complete the Bus Operator Training Program.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Ability to operate New Flyer and Gillig Buses.Ability to handle emergencies and use defensive driving techniques.Ability to adapt to changing environments.Ability to work split shifts and long hours when required.Ability to communicate effectively with passengers and staff.Ability to de-escalate situations on the bus.Ability to make quick decisions with minimal supervision.Ability to read, write, and speak clear English.Ability to read and understand maps and timetables.Ability to keep a timely schedule.Knowledge of streets and current bus routes.Knowledge of Bus Operator rules and regulations.Ability to wear company uniform.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:Ability to tolerate varying temperatures while performing duties.Ability to climb stairs, reach above shoulder level, and lift without assistance.Ability to operate pedals and sit for extended periods.Ability to work in environments with dust and noise.Ability to pass a physical with drug screening.DISCLAIMER STATEMENT:The above are general requirements that must be met for consideration.
