The professionals in the UCI LAW Career Development Office (CDO) offer deep experience in career counseling and placement. The areas of expertise that represent the legal professionals in the office include experience in law firms, judicial clerkships, government agencies, and public interest organizations. They have built invaluable relationships with alumni and employers around the country and the world. The office offers career counseling, special panel discussions on specific areas of law and legal markets, On-Campus Interviews, job and clerkship databases and a resource library to support students, alumni, and employers.
Your Role on the Team
The Assistant Director for Career Development, Public Sector (AD) provides expert career counseling to UCI Law's 500 J.D. students, particularly those students interested in pursuing public interest/public sector legal careers.
The AD utilizes their contacts in the public interest/public sector legal community and their in-depth knowledge and expertise of the evolving job market in this community to provide individually tailored career counseling to J.D. students interested in internships or post-graduate careers in public interest or the public sector.
In addition to maintaining and enhancing existing contacts in the public interest/public sector legal community, the AD establishes and cultivates new relationships. To ensure that J.D. students have the best available access to public interest/public sector networking and job opportunities, the AD must be an active member of local and national associations such as the National Association of Law Placement, Equal Justice Works, and the Southern California Pro Bono Managers.
As a recognized leader in providing public interest career advice and an expert in the public interest/public sector legal market, the AD is expected to make meaningful contributions to these organizations by presenting at conferences or contributing to articles or other initiatives. The AD is also expected to participate in the leadership of these organizations.
To increase public interest/public sector opportunities for J.D. students, the AD also independently formulates recruiting strategies related to employer participation in UCI Law's on-campus interview programs. To successfully do so, the AD must have knowledge of the current state and future direction of the job market, be familiar with relevant information resources, and be able to conduct research effectively and efficiently.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $80,000- $84,000 (Annual).
Required:
Advanced knowledge of adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.Strong ability to work with people from diverse cultures.Extensive professional network of practicing attorneys and potential employers.Advanced knowledge of JD programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.Creative and forward-looking approach that can identify and pursue new potential programs and innovative ways to present and deliver their content.Detailed knowledge of the public interest legal job market.Strong ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.Advanced knowledge of career development theories.Advanced knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.Juris Doctor degree required.4-6 years Public Interest Legal Practice.
