OpenAs the Supervisor of Health and Safety at Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), you will help us reach our health and safety goals leading to World-Class safety. In this job, you will provide leadership and support for field forces, office, and professionals for safety and compliance efforts. You will lead in the development, implementation, and monitoring of safety programs, standards, and processes, to protect the health and safety of our employees.PurposeTo supervise the planning, development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) programs, including the Safety, Loss Control/Prevention, Occupational Health, and Environmental/Hazardous Materials Management programs, and related processes of each District unit to ensure proactive protection of employees, the public, and the environment and District compliance with governmental regulations and codes.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDirects the work of subordinates in a functional unit and maintains staffing levels and work quality to meet defined objectives and assigned unit responsibility.Assists in developing and administering the department budget by monitoring unit budget expenditures against the plan.Leads staff and business unit managers in performance management efforts for SHE programs.Develops and implements SHE policies and procedures appropriate to business units and consistent with District policies.Develops and implements a SHE strategic plan by aligning the SHE plan with the business unit strategic plan.Oversees the planning, development, scheduling, presentation, and/or coordination of various Safety, Occupational Health, and Environmental/Hazardous Materials management training programs.Required EducationBS/BA degree from an accredited college or university majoring in safety, occupational health, environmental science, industrial hygiene, risk management engineering, physical/biological sciences, psychology, behavioral sciences, public/business administration or related field, or equivalent experience. If no degree, 14 or more (14+) years of experience are required.Required Experience QualificationsTen or more (10+) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience in development and implementation of a technical, comprehensive safety, occupational health, and environmental/hazardous materials management program and related processes and/or risk management programs, including two or more (2+) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience or lead project experience in a teamwork environment.Required Licenses/CertificatesA valid California driver’s license. Must meet and maintain the District’s frequent driver standard per SDP policy 4.7.2.2. Desirable to possess or be able to obtain and maintain one or more of the following: Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); California state Registered Environmental Assessor (REA-Class 1); Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM); Certified Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP).Knowledge OfMethods and techniques for planning, organizing, directing and controlling work activities; policies and procedures for evaluating and recording performance results; principles and practices of Safety, Occupational Health, and Environmental/Hazardous Materials Management programs/processes, policies, procedures, and standards; federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations governing SHE.Skills ToInterpret and apply District policies procedures; coach, mentor, motivate, influence, challenge and develop subordinate staff; manage contracts and work of consultants and contractors; prepare performance plans and evaluations for staff.Physical RequirementsApplicants must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation.Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) – Who We AreAs the nation’s sixth-largest community-owned electric service provider, we’re proud of our reputation as one of the best places to work in Sacramento.
