What does a Lead Engineer, HVAC do at Rinnai?

Provide engineering expertise and product development leadership to the design, application, marketing and sales efforts of Rinnai's HVAC products of North America (heat pump water and space systems, air handler units, direct vent furnaces, vent free convectors, and other space and water heating or cooling products). This will provide for a mix of talent and experiences to complement the engineering task expectations of developing comprehensive products, applications and solutions for both Residential and Commercial marketplace. Provide project leadership in support of the development of new products and applications that drive the company growth.

What you will do:

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and execute the planning of engineering analysis, product design and development for residential and commercial HVAC products and systems, including that meet and exceed product / program requirements.
  • Develop test plans including, application development, field testing, certification, and reliability assessment.
  • Develop solutions to optimize heat pump systems, heat transfer and airflow water for efficiency, performance and reliability.
  • Develop heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics design calculations for heat pump water heating and space heating/cooling systems.
  • Work in partnership with product performance and certification teams to ensure products meet performance and regulatory requirements, including transitioning to low GWP refrigerants.
  • Develop application solutions for both Commercial and Residential products to ensure expected and reliable product performance.
  • Provide technical direction and engineering analysis to ensure successful product development.
  • Act as mentor and interface with other engineers and assist with heat pump design, heat and fluid transfer, airflow and HVAC applications.
  • Develop, assist, review and approve the development of technical literature for Rinnai HVAC products.
  • Create and document technical data generated for assigned projects.
  • Participate and support technical committees in ASHRAE, AHRI and other external agencies and organizations.
  • Interface and support product and component approvals with certification and listing agencies such as UL, ETL, AHRI, Energy Star, and CSA.
  • Support a collaborative environment and drive knowledge sharing throughout the engineering, certification, technical support and product performance test group.
  • Actively develop new product applications and / or product solutions to support the marketplace growth of Rinnai.
  • Full product application responsibility from beginning to end. Embrace and support growing business demands in a changing environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Related Field. Master's degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in engineering applications and product development fields related heat pump systems, and other HVAC products.
  • Understanding of ASHRAE, UL, ETL, NEEA, ANSI, DOE, AHRI, Energy Star, CSA standards, processes and testing methods and requirements related to heat pump systems & HVAC products.
  • Strong experience with mechanical systems, designs and HVAC product development and application.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D software for production of drawings, models, diagrams and bill of materials etc.
  • Experience in HVAC design software (e.g. Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, EnergyPlus) is a plus.
  • Experience developing products via New Product Development process (Stage Gate Process).

  • Understanding of Certification standards as they apply to HVAC products.
  • Experience with the following engineering tools would be desirable. Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Design of Experiment.
