Overview:This is a mid-level staff technical position within the Tax Department with primary tax accounting and compliance responsibilities. Prepare federal and state income tax-related filings for insurance and non-insurance entities. Responsible for all aspects of tax accounting related to quarterly and annual reporting for insurance and non-insurance entities based on applicable accounting methods (i.e. Statutory and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) reporting).

Responsibilities:

Prepare and review of GAAP income tax provisions and deferred balance sheets in accordance with ASC 740.Preparation and review of Statutory income tax provisions and SSAP 101 reporting for life insurance entities.Prepare and review of federal and state income tax returns and estimated payments for life and non-life entities in the group.Prepare investment related schedules for the corporate income tax returns for accurate investment income and capital gain/loss reporting.Communicate with external auditors and provide requested information as needed.Initiate tax software automation and process improvements.Assist in analysis of new transactions and investments as needed.Perform tax research and make recommendations based on analysis.Summarize foreign information reporting requirements for corporate tax returns to include Forms 926, 5471, 8865, 8991, 8992 and 8993.Calculate tax basis of Sammons Financial Group Companies balance sheet (including investments).Analyze tax aspects of new reinsurance treaties; assist general accounting and actuarial teams in analyzing the impact of taxes in capital and product pricing models. Support the annual business plan process.

Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or other related field RequiredMinimum 5 years' experience working in corporate tax environment or public accounting firm RequiredPrevious experience in life insurance taxation (i.e. Subchapter L of the IRC) RequiredExperience with tax accounting principles under US GAAP and National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) statutory accounting RequiredExperience with tax accounting, compliance and financial reporting for investments including partnerships, bonds, stocks, structured securities, hedging, derivatives, real estate, mortgages and debt instruments PreferredIntermediate level tax technical skills in corporate income tax, consolidated groups, and complex life insurance entities (including offshore captive insurance companies)Demonstrated in depth understanding of life insurance company statutory and GAAP financial reportingEffective written and oral communication skills with an engaging and approachable styleAdvanced Microsoft Office Excel skills; working knowledge of other Microsoft Office applicationsProven ability to prioritize and handle multiple complex tasks in a fast paced environmentAdvanced skills with Accounting for Income Taxes under ASC 740 and/or SSAP 101High degree of analytical skillsExcellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracyDemonstrated ability to research and apply tax laws and financial reporting standardsProficient in corporate tax return preparation software (OneSource experience preferred)Basic knowledge of internal controls over financial reportingDesire to attain or enhance insurance-industry specific accounting, finance and tax skillsDriven, team-oriented individual interested in working in a high performance cultureProcess improvement mindsetCritical thinking and problem-solving skills with the courage to challenge existing processesCPA PreferredFLMI PreferredSuitability Requirements:Criminal background check required.
