Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direction of manager/supervisor, work as clinical laboratory technologist in Blood Bank and responsible for but not limited to; bench work, rotating weekends, inventory management and or other assigned duties required for smooth laboratory operations, patient safety and optimal patient care. Collaborate with other sections of laboratory or departments within institution, to provide highest quality of care.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:The [Clinical Laboratory Technologist] is charged with and responsible for:• Following laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of tests, maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Perform patient testing and adhering to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, maintenance and preventive maintenance, following the laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established performance specifications, identifying and documenting problems that may adversely affect test performance, and notifying the supervisor, assistant director(s) or director and documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.• Follows standard precautions, laboratory safety/infection control protocols, use appropriate PPE, clean/decontaminate bench surfaces or equipment and does documentation as appropriate. Receives/handles/in-lab/label specimens, ensures integrity, transcribes requisitions/orders if required, prints labels, separate and prioritize specimens for analyses, preservation and storage and distribution to other section, reference laboratory/send out as appropriate and required. Ensure data integrity (generating, transforming, maintaining and assuring accuracy, completeness and consistency of data for a specimen inclusive all information collected, and data generated, to produce a test result). Receives/issues/quarantines blood and blood products, resolves discrepancies, request specimens from floors/unit for further workup as required. Perform ABO Grouping & Rh Typing, Direct Antiglobulin Testing, Antibody Screen Testing, Antibody Identification, Fetal Bleed Screen Testing, Antigen Typing, Antibody Elution and Crossmatch Testing, Donor Unit Retyping, transfusion Reaction Work-Up and other tests as required under the scope of testing and training/competency. Receives and issues blood products, handle and preserve specimens according to requirements. Review of applicable test results daily for accuracy and reliability, accurately document in Laboratory Information System, communicate and properly document critical laboratory values to providers and escalate when not able to do so. Ensure data integrity (generating, transforming, maintaining and assuring accuracy, completeness and consistency of data for a specimen inclusive all information collected, and data generated, to produce a test result).• Complies with laboratory SOP(s), patient confidentiality/safety/privacy, HIPAA and PHI rule and that all patient identified information received or generated in laboratory, are health related confidential information and subject to confidentiality, HIPAA and PHI rules and regulations. Maintains standards of care, work on laboratory goals to prioritize patient safety/care and respond to inquiries courteously/accurately and in a timely manner and provide only necessary information admissible under the rules to the providers. Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment for patient/public health safety, optimal patient care, best laboratory practices, rules/regulations and demonstrates standards of performance and behaviors consistent with timely clock in and clock out, scheduled breaks, cell PHONE usage, dress code and rules of conduct. Ensures adequate operating supplies, appropriate inventory management, specimen handling/management including all pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical processing, monitors/checks and document environmental conditions, physically inspect reagents/controls/calibrators or other supplies, checks lot number and expiration dates and does required documentation. Troubleshoots problems and calls facility services or vendor technical support when needed. Assist in staff training/shadowing, actively participates in quality assurance and performance improvement process of department/institution. Work on pending lists, communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisor or laboratory management as required to accomplish tasks within due course of time for optimal patient care, safety and efficient laboratory operations. Ensures Shift to shift communication to staff/supervisors about pending tasks and ongoing compliance to avoid safety/patient care issues. Knowledgeable about SOP(s) relevant to scope of services. Keeps self-abreast of knowledge/developments in laboratory medicine and compliance with continuing education requirements. Perform other tasks as needed and be able to work on holidays and rotate weekends. Minimum Qualifications1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and2. One year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 57 1 of the New York State Public Health Law.
